Object 416 Medium Tank

The Soviet medium tank T-34 eventually developed to the T-54 path. The lateral branch was the T-34M modified and completely rebuilt T-34, A-44 modification or a prototype T-44, and at the end of the T-54 is the Object 416. Little is known about this, it was one of the prototype T-54, had a very low profile and layout similar to the VK4502(P) Ausf B. The engine is at the front and the rear crew compartment. The prototype was created in 1951, had the dimensions: length 7.94 m, width 3.24 m and height of only 1.82 m and the weight was only 24 t. It was very low, and thus difficult to detect and hit, while a large width provided good conditions for traction. The tank had an engine of 400 hp which allowed him to achieve on the road speed of 50km/h, the crew consisted of four people, and was armed with 100mm caliber gun and a coaxial gun cal.7.62 mm.

The purpose of this development work consisted in creation of a radically new design with ensuring the maximum possible protection for the crew while imposing vehicle weight limits. All the crewmen were positioned in the turret where they could be better protected, with the power pack and transmission being placed at the front of the hull. A prototype vehicle was built and tested. Although initially the design seemed to show some promise, difficulties of ensuring simultaneous vehicle steering and firing led to its not being pursued, and development work on this ceased.
