Project 633 Romeo class
The Soviet Union built reportedly only 20 or so of these submarines; China is estimated to have built 84 between mid-1962 and 1984, plus four for exports to Egypt and another four to North Korea. Russia’s last units were stricken in 1987 and scrapped in 1989. As usual, the chronology is hopelessly jumbled, du in no small measure to the Soviet practice of giving vessels both names and pennant numbers, and their very un-American practice of changing these designators over time.
