Project 10200 "Khalzan" helicopter carrier

Project 10200 "Khalzan" was an unrealized project of the Soviet antisubmarine helicopter carriers. The original idea of creating relatively cheap helicopter carriers (an order of magnitude lower than TACR), under simplified requirements and on the basis of hulls and mechanisms of civil ships, arose in the early 1970's. When performing the "Order". Ensure their combat stability should have been AB (then - TAKR). The tangible military and economic effectiveness of such helicopter carriers could be achieved only when they were built as part of a series of transport vessels without disrupting the continuity of development and construction of TAKR.

Project 10200 of the helicopter was developed Nikolaev PKB "Chernosudoproekt" in 1978-1980. In 1973-1974, the organization of the Navy and the industry with the participation of the Central Research Institute named after Academician A. Krylov was carried out research work devoted to the justification of the construction of a comprehensive anti-system (KPLS). To ensure that the number of planned KPLS in the creation of resources into the research work, it was suggested that auxiliary helicopter carriers be carriers of antisubmarine helicopters.

It was assumed that these ships will be required to ensure the wide participation of helicopters in the underwater environment, the search for submarines, tracking them in peacetime and their destruction with the outbreak of hostilities. The idea of creating a relatively simple and inexpensive helicopter carrier on the basis of the civil ship Project 1609 (ro-ro) emerged during the research to substantiate the comprehensive ASW-system. They were supposed to be built simultaneously with the aircraft carrier for the rapid build-up of naval fleet of helicopters as part of a series of civilian ships being built at the CSY, with minimal equipment.

This idea is embodied in a prepared in 1977, tactical and technical requirements [TTR] of the Navy for the development of the project 10200 (code "Khalzan") antisubmarine helicopter carriers on the basis of high-speed large-capacity vessel with a horizontal cargo handling (ro-ro).

Development of the project was entrusted to the Central Clinical Hospital 10200 "Chernomorsudproekt". Chief Designer was appointed YT Kamenetskii. Draft project was completed in late 1977. In it are several options were considered: two of them provide for the establishment of ships providing basing 28-30 and helicopters equipped with prospective or existing weapon systems, and the other two were the mobilization conversion options of already built ships, with the possibility of basing up to 12 helicopters. The total displacement of the ship in all of the project is 30,000 tons.

The conversion option looked at the Pr.1609 ship "Kapitan Smirnov" (Head, 1978, all built 4 pieces) with a gas turbine power plant 2 x M25 GGTA with the recycling loop and a capacity of 25,000 hp for each of the two shafts, deadweight 20,000 tonnes, total displacement of 35,000 tons, length 203 m, width 30 m, depth 21 m, draft of 9.9 m and a cruising speed of 26 knots was built at the Kherson CVD.

As a result, the draft was approved with 30 helicopters such as the Ka-27, with completion to reduce the level of physical fields, including acoustic, as well as the introduction of improvements in the stability and buoyancy. In addition, to enhance the combat stability, it was recommended that the draft provisions to ensure the deployment of promising fighter vertical take-off and landing Yak-41. The ship had a carrier-based architecture: Free Flight deck with a shifted to starboard superstructure, which also was the top Holds 6 helicopter hangar. The below deck hangar, served by two lifts is located 22 helicopter.

Project was given a positive opinion 1st Institute of the Navy. TTP to create helicopter pr.10200 was prepared in 1977, USSR Council of Ministers Resolution of 04.21.1977, the planned construction in 1981-1990 GG a series of four ships of the project on the stocks in Nikolayev ?1 GCC as part of a series of ro-ro pr.1609 parallel construction on the stocks series TAKR pr.1143 with the gradual improvement of the project.

In the design process as a result of the placement of electronic means SAM, the introduction of measures to protect etc, the design become a rather complicated and expensive warship, similar to the ship project in 1609 only underwater contours and GEM. At the same time due to the increased weight of the ship it could be built only on the same stocks as the aircraft carrier, which violated the original intent of the simultaneous construction of ships of both types.

When included in the plan for military shipbuilding, the range of combat missions of these ships was expanded by the General Staff. The approved plan provided for the construction of two landing and anti-submarine helicopter carriers at the ChSZ, 10200 immediately after the fourth and instead of the fifth TAKR.

Thus, their role and place in the fleet, as well as the procedure for building TAKR, adopted in 1978, changed. This led to the need to revise the previously issued TTZ on Pr. 10200 and to extend the existing Navy requirements to it in full. However, their implementation on the basis of civil hulls was impossible, and the cost became close to the cost of TAKR. The idea of using such a base for the creation of helicopter carriers lost its meaning, that's why the Navy and SMEs did not recommend 10200 for construction, taking into account also the presence of a number of serious shortcomings that reduce the combat capabilities of the ship and are unacceptable not only in combat but also in peacetime.

Since 1980 active construction of aircraft carriers of the project in 1143, the only stocks which could be built "Khalzan" were busy, it was decided to build a "Khalzan" only in the presence of the second free pile at CSY. Resolution of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the USSR of March 1980 plan for 1988-1990. It included the construction of two ships of the project 10200 (instead of a fifth aircraft carrier, the construction of which thus relegated to the end of the decade). Due to much worse performance than TAKR, at the insistence of the Navy and the project 10200 was dropped from construction plan.

Thus the project 10200 "Khalzan" was closed, and preference was given to the construction of aircraft carriers of the project in 1143. In the report to the Minister of Defense on the results of consideration of the helicopter carrier's design and the decisions taken on it in order to avoid a break in the construction of TAKR (which were "urgently needed to ensure the combat stability of the fleet's forces"), the Navy Commander and the Minister of the shipbuilding industry proposed the construction of a second such ship after the launch of the TAKR "Baku".
