Squadron 8
The Squadron started its proud existence flying Harvard's on 1 January 1951. In 1959 the Squadron was divided into elements of citizen and permanent forces, thereafter all Harvard weapons courses were presented by permanent force instructors at 8 Squadron until 1970. The Squadron received its colours on 14 November 1970. During 1973 the Harvard was replaced by Impala Mk I jet aircraft and on 25 November 1975, 8 Squadron was the first squadron to receive the Impala Mk aircraft. 8 Squadron was awarded the Freedom of the City of Bloemfontein on 6 March 1982. Colonel Boet Troskie was appointed as the squadron's Honorary Colonel on 26 July 1988. 8 Squadron is currently the only operational Impala squadron in the SA Airforce. As part of the Transformation process the South African Air Force has decided to relocate 8 Squadron to Air Force Base Hoedspruit with effect of 1 January 1999. 8 Squadron opened officially on 1 April 1999 operating from Air Force Base Hoedspruit.
8 Squadron provides efficient and cost effective fighter training while maintaining an operational fighter capability.
