Squadron 22
On 1 July 1942, 22 Torpedo Bomber Reconnaissance Squadron was formed in Durban out of the then 37 Coastal Flight. Flying Ventura bombers, the Squadron saw extensive service during the 2nd World War, initially patrolling the Mozambique Channel and later operating out of Gibraltar until being disbanded on 24 October 1945.
22 Squadron was revived on 1 January 1954 but was to operate as 22 Flight. Varied tasks, once again operating Venturas, were carried out before the Flight was again disbanded in 1958.
In January 1964 the traditions of the old Squadron were again reborn with the reformation of 22 Flight equipped with Westland Wasp helicopters.
22 Flight became 22 Squadron in 1976 and the Alouette III helicopter came in strength in 1978. The Wasp helicopter was phased out in 1990 and the 30 Squadron Pumas were absorbed upon the disbandment of 30 Squadron on 31 December 1991.
At present the Squadron operates both Alouette and Puma helicopters in a maritime and landward role.
