Mbombe Infantry Combat Vehicle
The development of Mbombe 8 enabled Paramount Group to provide potential customers with a complete family of 4 x 4, 6 x 6 and 8 x 8 AFVs which share over 80% of common components to reduce through life costs and make for easier training and logistics. This commonality relates to both the driveline aggregates, as well as the fact that all three vehicles utilise a ‘conventional’ or ‘in-line’ automotive driveline configuration, positioning the powerpack at the front of the vehicle and along its centre line. This configuration results in far greater efficiency in terms of the transfer of power from the powerpack to the wheels, as the loss of power associated with a second transfer gearbox necessary for ‘unconventional’ drivelines, such as with side-engined vehicles, is eliminated.
Another important feature is the driveline commonality across the family of vehicles, as is the case with the Marauder XT (4x4), Mbombe 6 (6x6) and Mbombe 8. This presents a unique opportunity for the global market, affording a prospective end-user of all three vehicles significant savings in the areas of maintenance and logistical support.
Mbombe 4 is an effective Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle. Using the most advanced technology available, Paramount Group developed the Mbombe as the first vehicle in its class with a flat-bottom, blast-protected hull; the reduced silhouette has obvious benefits on the battlefield. Outstanding protection, mobility and fire-power come standard.v The mine-protected, flat-bottom hull reduces the silhouette to under 2.4 meters, which delivers significant benefits in combat - reducing the target for enemy gunners and reducing the effects of side blasts/IED attacks. Mbombe provides excellent stopping power against ballistic attack (STANAG 4569 level 3 as standard) and anti-tank land mine explosions under its flat hull or under any wheel station (STANAG level 4a and 4b), as well as world-class levels of protection against kinetic attack. Anti-blast seats prevent injury to the crew from the extreme acceleration following an explosion beside or under the vehicle, and extra protection can be added to meet specific user requirements.
Mbombe 4 is equipped with independent suspension all-round and powerful drivetrain to ensure outstanding mobility characteristics over all types of terrain, even when combat laden. It has a maximum road speed of 150km/h and delivers excellent cross-country performance independent suspension.
The 6x6 Mbombe is a highly agile low-profile infantry fighting vehicle, able to carry considerable payloads over all types of terrain. New technology provides outstanding mine protection, while the flat bottom hull reduces the silhouette to under 2.4 meters. A flexible battlefield tool, the Mbombe 6 can be configured as an armoured personnel carrier or armoured fighting vehicle.
Configured for optimum performance in conventional and asymmetric warfare, counter terrorism and peacekeeping missions. There is ample space for the driver, commander, gunner and 8 fully equipped infantrymen together with tools, ammunition and equipment. The Mbombe 6 can easily be configured as a highly effective armoured fighting vehicle by mounting a heavy machine gun or automatic canon/remote weapon station.
The Mbombe 6 model provides protection against landmines, IEDs, side blasts and RPG attacks. This is achieved by new technology that provides outstanding mine protection without resorting to the traditional V-shape design. The low silhouette also offers a reduced target, while the armoured hull provides excellent stopping power against ballistic attack (STANAG 4569 level 3 as standard) and anti-tank land mine explosions (STANAG level 4a and 4b).
In May 2016 Paramount announced it had started local production of its 6x6 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (Mbombe 6) in Jordan as part of a defence industrial partnership between Paramount Group and the Jordanian defence industry. The multi-million dollar contract will provide the Jordanian Armed Forces with IFVs which will provide the platform for Jordan’s future combat vehicle requirements. Paramount Group and Jordan Manufacturing Services Solutions (JMSS) announced the signing of a new contract that will see JMSS leading on the local production and assembly at a dedicated facility in the Dulail-KADDB Industrial Park. The announcement was made at the Special Operations Forces Exhibition & Conference (SOFEX-2016) in Amman.
JMSS and partners would start immediately to fabricate the jigs to build the MBOMBE hulls before producing the second tranche of 25 armored vehicles in Jordan. The proposed build will require them to fabricate the hull assembly as all welded sub-assemblies and cut and bend plates will be delivered by Paramount Group. The bolt on assembly will be done in Jordan, as with the major sub-assemblies like the power pack, wheel stations, suspension and hatches. The Jordanian MBOMBE is a bespoke version developed by Paramount Group. It can uniquely withstand the extreme climates of the Middle East.
The advanced Infantry Combat Vehicle, Mbombe 8, made its debut at Kazakhstan Defence Expo (KADEX 2016) starting in Astana on the 2nd June 2016. The Mbombe 8 is at the vanguard of armoured vehicle technologies and has been developed to meet the increasing demand for multi-role, high mobility and mine hardened platforms, and for the changing demands of the global battlefield. Paramount Innovation and Design (a Paramount Group Business) has been responsible for the development and production of a broad range of advanced armoured and mine protected vehicles that are in operation around the world.
The Mbombe 8 is at the vanguard of armoured vehicle technologies and has been developed to meet the increasing demand for multi-role, high mobility and mine hardened platforms, and for the changing demands of the global battlefield. The Mbombe 8 employs an innovative new form of construction to give unprecedented levels of protection, while keeping profile to a minimum.
Key features of the Mbombe 8 include:
- Gross weight of 28 tonnes and curb weight of 19 tonnes
- Payload of 9 tonnes which covers weapon system, ammunition, crew and supplies
- Powered by a 6 cylinder engine turbo charged diesel engine
- Six speed automatic transmission
- Max speed of 110km/h
- Operating range: 800 km
- High levels of ballistic and mine protection: ballistic protection: STANAG 4569 Level 3+ and blast protection: STANAG 4569 Level 4a and 4b
- Wide range of turrets and weapon stations can be integrated e.g. the AU-220M remote turret armed with 57mm cannon and a 7.62 mm machine gun
- The cooling systems and driveline have been tested and proven in winter conditions of -55 Celsius and desert conditions of +55 Celsius
- Large internal volume due to position of powerpack
The Mbombe 8 utilises a ‘conventional’ or ‘in-line’ automotive driveline configuration, positioning the powerpack at the front of the vehicle and along its centre line. This configuration results in far greater efficiency in terms of the transfer of power from the powerpack to the wheels, as the loss of power associated with a second transfer gearbox necessary for ‘unconventional’ drivelines, such as with side-engined vehicles, is eliminated. The vehicle features mine-resistant flat floor technology which is central to the design of the 8x8 platform. The armoured hull provides excellent stopping power against ballistic attack (STANAG 4569 level 3 as standard) and anti-tank land mine explosions (STANAG level 4a and 4b).
Paramount Group, the African-based global defence and aerospace company, unveiled a new generation 8x8 Infantry Combat Vehicle, representing the pinnacle of land system technologies which is designed to meet the world-wide demand for sophisticated, but affordable military equipment that provides unrivalled protection for land forces personnel, in an era of unprecedented asymmetrical threats and conflict. The Founder and Executive Chairman of Paramount Group, Ivor Ichikowitz said: “This is a momentous occasion in the evolution of Paramount’s Group’s offering and we are very excited to develop this high speed, long-range and low profile 8x8 armoured combat vehicle. In less than a decade Paramount has designed, developed and industrialised an armoured vehicle nearly every two years, from a clean sheet design. Without exception we have built a reputation for pushing the boundaries and creating armoured vehicles that are groundbreaking in their design, protection levels and mobility.
