2 Air Depot

2 Air Depot is a lodger unit situated at AFB Ysterplaat, and resorts under functional command of Air Logistic Command in Pretoria. 2 Air Depot (2 AD) was established on 1 November 1984. The primary reason for the establishment of the Depot was to divorce the Intermediate and Depot level logistic activities from the operational level activities in the Cape areas. This entailed the amalgamation of 2 Aircraft Servicing Unit with the maintenance and manufacturing workshops of AFB Ysterplaat.

In 1990 the logistic support activities in the Cape Area were further rationalised, and culminated with the amalgamation of 11 Air Depot with 2 Air Depot in March 1992. These that all the depot level activities in the Cape area were centralised under 2 Air Depot.

2 Air Depot had to stay abreast with the changes taking place in the SA Air Force as well as the external environment. One of the most important changes was the new logistic support approach of the SA Air Force to de-centralise the logistic management of system / product support as close as possible to the operational "coal face". Within this approach 2 Air Depot accepted the responsibility for the total integrated logistic support of the C47-TP and Pilatus Astra product systems, as well as the Product Support Supplier responsibility for Maritime Safety and Survival Equipment of various aircraft systems.

Over and above these primary responsibilities, 2 Air Depot also renders depot level support with regards to the recovery of crashed aircraft, maintenance of hand weapons, design and development services as well as numerous other logistic support services to the geographical area. 2 Air Depot, as in the past, also still plays a substantial role in the manufacture and repair of aircraft spares and ground equipment for weapons systems in the South African Air Force.
