AAGW (Anti-Aircraft Gun Wheeled Vehicle System)
The Purpose of the development of this system was to defend allied forces’ points of interests, as well as defend friendly mobile troops, from low-altitude attacks by enemy aircrafts. The AAGW makes localized support and self-targeting functionalities possible through electron optical targeting systems and visual targeting systems.
The Air Defense C2A System with Local Air Defense Radar supports synchronized operation with Airfield Anti-Aircraft Control. The system is loaded with Electro Optical Targeting Systems (EOTS) and a Visual Targeting System enabling Automatic Tracking and Self-Targeting Capabilities. Application of wheeled platform enables mobile and localized support for troops.
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration announced on 27 June 2020 that it will enter into full-scale mass production with the signing of the first mass-production contract with Hanwha Defense on the 24th for a 30mm wheeled anti-aircraft gun with a size of 250 billion won. The agency previously held a meeting of the 125th Defense Project Promotion Committee in January 2020 and decided on the first mass production plan for a wheeled anti-aircraft gun.
The 30m wheeled anti-aircraft artillery project is a project to secure alternative power for aging the 20mm anti-aircraft gun'Balkan' and resolving restrictions on support for mobile units. The project period is 11 years from this year to 2031, and the total project cost is about 2,200 billion won.
The wheeled anti-aircraft gun was developed by investing 55 billion won for 5 years from June 2015 with Hanwha Defense Systems and Hanwha Systems. As a result of the test evaluation, it was announced that the development was completed on 05 June 2019 when all the military requirements were met.
The 30m wheeled anti-aircraft gun can be operated in conjunction with the anti-aircraft C2A system, the local airborne radar, and the anti-aircraft anti-aircraft control system. In addition, it is equipped with an electro-optical tracking device (EOTS) and a visual regulator to enable self-target detection and automatic tracking.
The anti-aircraft vehicle has a combat weight of 26.5 tons. The top speed reaches 90 km/h. It has a radar tracking range of 7km and an effective range of 3km, with a launch rate of 600 rounds per minute. Since it is a 2-pack, it can shoot 1200 rounds per minute.
Five major defense companies and 200 small and medium-sized partners participated in the wheel-type anti-aircraft gun system development project. The localization rate is more than 95%, and economic ripple effects such as vitalization of the domestic defense industry and creation of related jobs are expected, as well as future exports.
The radiation agency has a 30mm wheeled anti-aircraft gun that increases the range by 1.6 times compared to the existing Balkans, and is developed as a wheeled vehicle to support air defense operations with a mobile unit.
Even if it cannot be interlocked, the EOTS is equipped with its own target detection capability, so it is expected that the mission performance will be improved by about 4 times. EOTS was developed for the first time by Hanwha Systems as a domestic technology, and its target detection and tracking ability is improved and the unit price is one-third higher than that of overseas aids imported and used by similar weapons systems. In addition, the agency evaluated that it could be operated with less than half of the existing anti-aircraft guns' manpower (48 to 18, based on the company), so that it could prepare for the reduction of the manpower due to the restructuring of the military in the future.
The ROKA has deployed anti-aircraft guns with 20mm towed guns (approximately 1000), 20mm self-propelled guns (200), K30 systems (176), and 35mm guns (36).
Ahn Hyo-geun, head of the guided weapons division of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, said, "It is expected that the mass-production of 30mm self-propelled anti-aircraft guns will greatly contribute to the vitalization of the defense industry and job creation in times of low altitude air defense capability and economic hardship through rapid response with improved mobility."
