12th Infantry Regiment

The 12th Infantry Regiment was originally activated as the 12th Regiment on May 1, 1948 at Kunsan and was first commanded by Lt. Col. Paik In Ki. The unit was not initially assigned to a division but was assigned to the 1st Division following that units activation in May 1949.

In 1949 the 12th Regiment was deployed in the Ongjin Peninsula Area, specifically at Inch'on and was responsible for security along the 38th parallel. On May 21, 1949 North Korean forces against a southern hill of Kuksa-bong, a portion of the mountain chain the comprised the 12th Regiments AOR. On May 26 the DPRK forces had penetrated ROK defenses and occupied Chak-san to the east and Turak-san. The 12th Regiments counterattack was initially successful in driving back the North Koreans but suffered setbacks when the North Koreans renewed their assault with a reinforced brigade.
