11th Infantry Regiment

The 11th Infantry Regiment was originally activated as the 11th Regiment on May 4, 1948 at Suwon andwas first commanded by Lt. Col. Park Jin Kyong. The unit was not initially assigned to a division but was assigned to the 1st Division following that units activation in May 1949.

The 11th Regiment took over responsibility for the security for the area between Ch'ongdan abd Korangp'o in November 1948 and began to build fortifications to defend against an attack from the North Koreans. On May 3, 1949, positions under the control of the 11th Regiment were attacked by elements of the NKPA's 3rd Regiment, 1st Division at Songak-son. The battle was fought over three hills, Hill 292, Hill UN, and Hill Dove. After intense fighting and despite being outnumbered, the 11th Regiment was able to recapture and secure the positions, though 39 ROK soldiers were killed in the effort.

Nearly two weeks later, another North Korean unit, of a battalion-sized strength, attacked in the Paech'on area. The attack was pushed back following an infusion of reinforcements.

In late July 1949 the 1st Battalion of the 11th Regiment was ordered to attack and seize hill 488 which had been ocupied by North Korean soldiers and allowed the Nortk Koreans to look down on Kaesong, which it attacked with mortar shells on July 25. The fighting for Hill 488 continued until August 3, when the 11th Regiment secured Hill Lighthouse, Hill Dove, and Hill 292.
