In May 1981, the 5th Infantry Brigade (Separate) was expanded to a division. This led to the dissolution of Task Force Kaisa, which was then operating in the Cagayan Valley area. In lieu of Task Force Kaisa, the 1st Infantry Brigade was organized as one of the component brigades of of the 5th Infantry Division pursuant to General Orders Number 7, Headquarters 5 Infantry Division, PA dated 3 June 1981. The mission of the unit was to command, control and supervise tactical operations of the infantry battalions and to contain the continuing unrest in the Cagayan Valley area. The Brigade was initially based at Camp Upi, Gamu, Isabela and was later transferred to Tupang, Alcala, Cagayan in 1985.

On 15 April 1988, 1st Infantry Brigade was later renamed as 501st Infantry Brigade pursuant to General Orders No 199, Headquarters Philippine Army, dated 20 April 1988. At the height of the conflict brought about by the communist terrorists in the area, the unit was in Cato, Tuao, Cagayan then later to Calanan, Tabuk, Kalinga in 1994.
