5th Field Artillery Battery (Separate)
5th Field Artillery Battalion
"King of Battles"
The 5th Field Artillery Battery (Separate) traces its lineage to the 5th Field Artillery Battalion, which was first organized on 15 February 2005, pursuant to General Orders Number 28, Headquarters 9th Infantry Division, dated 7 February 2005 and confirmed by General Orders Number 396, Headquarters Philippine Army, dated 15 September 2005. Personnel were initially drawn from the Division's infantry battalions, specifically those who were graduates of Field Artillery Courses, as well as personnel and equipment of from A Battery, 4th Field Artillery Battalion, an element of the 2nd Infantry Division.
On 9 May 2005, the 5th Field Artillery Battalion was formally activated at Camp Elias Angeles, San Jose, Pili, Camarines del Sur. The unit consisted of a Headquarters and Headquarters Battery and 3 firing batteries. A Battery was subsequently placed in direct support of the 901st Infantry Brigade at Brgy Villahermosa, Daraga, Albay, while B Battery was placed in direct support of 902nd Infantry Brigade at Camp Busig-on, Brgy Tulay na Lupa, Labo, Camarines del Norte. C Battery was located with the 9th Infantry Division Headquarters.
With the persistent study on the rationalization of the Field Artillery employment in internal security operations, under the supervision of the Office of the Army Chief Artillery (OACA), then Commanding General, Philippine Army Lieutenant General Romeo P Tolentino approved the construction of a unified Field Artillery organization on 24 May 2007.
The AOCA, which was the responsible only on administrative matters of all Field Artillery units in the Philippine Army, was subequently deactivated and an Army Artillery Regiment (Provisional) was activated in its place on 16 June 2007. This unit was to be responsible on both administrative and operational matters of all field artillery units.
As a result of the reoganization, the 5th Field Artillery Battalion, one of 6 field artillery battalion deployed in Luzon and Visayas, was downgraded into a battery. The unit, redesignated the 5th Field Artillery Battery Separate, technically assigned to the Army Artillery Regiment (Provisional), was placed under the operational control of the 9th Infantry Division. The reorganized unit consisted of 4 firing platoons, each with 3 105mm howitzers, 2 of which were deployed to provide support to the Division's 2 Infantry Brigades, while the other two, 3rd and 4th Platoons, were located with the Division's Headquarters. The 1st Platoon, was assigned to support the 901st Infantry Brigade based at Brgy Villahermosa, Daraga, Albay, while the 2nd Platoon performed the same mission for the 902nd Infantry Brigade based at Camp Busig-on, Brgy Tulay na Lupa, Labo, Camarines del Norte.
