Les mongoles

Les mongoles [The Mongols] was a Mai Mai militia group active in the Kivus region of Congo [Zaire] and opposed to the Rassemblement Congolais pour la Democratie (RCD). It mostly committed acts of banditry, and is poorly attested. In 2009 the only North Kivu Mai-Mai group to have put forward significant numbers of fighters for integration (600-800) was the Hutu-dominated Mongol group. In part, this was because the other groups are small. However, they are also non-Rwandophone in composition and are likely to be anxiously withholding fighters and weapons.

Elements from seven of the Mai-Mai groups in North and South Kivu agreed in May 2009 to form a party known as the "Alliance of Popular and Patriotic Forces of Congo" (in French, "Alliance des Forces Populaires et Patriotiques du Congo"--AFPC). This second Mai-Mai grouping brought together elements from seven Mai-Mai groups across the two Kivus. Certain Mai-Mai groups have elements represented in both parties. The seven groups were as follows: PARECO/South Kivu, Mai-Mai Vurondo, Kasindien, Shabunda, Simba (North Kivu), Simba (South Kivu), and Mongol.
