Jibril Rajoub

Jibril Rajoub was Arafat's national security adviser and he also headed the Preventive Security Service in the West Bank. He retains considerable influence in both the Preventive Security Service and the Tanzim. Rajoub was considered close to Mahmoud Abbas [Abu Mazen] until Abbas chose Mohammed Dahlan, Rajoub's sworn rival, as minister of security.

In a May 2004 interview with the Saudi newspaper Okaz, Jibril Rajoub called former Palestinian National Security Advisor Mohammed Dahlan a collaborator. Dahlan and Rajoub were both jailed by Israel during the first Intifada. Under Oslo they became heads of the Preventive Security Services in Gaza and the West Bank respectively. At that time they were both viewed as pragmatists, representative of a new generation of Palestinians who could live with Israel. Both Israel and the US groomed them as successors to Arafat, and the Preventive Security Force received CIA training to crack down on terrorist groups. Both Dahlan and Rajoub were implicated in financial scandals and human rights violations.
