Active Organization for the Liberation of Palestine
The Active Organization for the Liberation of Palestine was formed in 1967 by a physician named Dr. 'Isam Sartawi. Its original goal was to provide medical support to Arab fighters. A year after its formation, the AOLP merged with Yasser Arafat's Fatah organization, but Sartawi separated from Fatah in November 1968 after an argument with Arafat during a PLO meeting.
The AOLP received support from Iraqi troops in Jordan due in some measure to Sartawi's prior residence in Baghdad and good relationship with Iraqi leaders. Iraqi troops provided protection for the AOLP's training camp, and in July 1971, the AOLP rejoined Arafat's Fatah. The organization was essentially disbanded when Sartawi was assassinated in Portugal on April 12, 1983.
