Armed Oceanic Patrol Oaxaca-class
Oaxaca-class vessels are capable of developing operations with the support of a helicopter and a high-speed interceptor-type vessel, which can be housed on the decks of the ocean patrol, This expands its surveillance radius, reduces operating costs and increases its level of response and effectiveness. Likewise, these vessels support the civilian population in case of emergencies or in search and rescue situations.
The offshore patrol vessel ARM Jalisco (PO-167), was commissioned. It is the seventh Oaxaca-class vessel constructed by ASTIMAR, demonstrating that the shipyard can construct a variety of platforms. On July 2, 2018 the shipyard with headquarters in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, the launched the ARM Oceanic Patrol “JALISCO” (PO-167), whose mission is to carry out operations of patrol and surveillance in the Exclusive Economic Zone to keep the rule of law at sea; In addition to conducting search and rescue operations to safeguard human life, as well as actions to support the civilian population, which guarantee the physical safety of people in situations of disaster.
The launching ceremony of this Unit, which was built in accordance with the Ship Replacement Program of the Mexican Navy, was held last May and was presided by Admiral Vidal Francisco Soberón Sanz, Secretary of the Navy and High Command of the Navy of Mexico, accompanied by Mrs. Georgina Ventura Menchaca de Soberón, as well as Master Alejandro Murat Hinojosa, Governor of the state of Oaxaca and the holders of the Legislative and Judicial Powers of the entity, among other naval, civil and military authorities.
During the event, the Secretary of the Navy said that "in the naval sense, the Oceanic Patrol" JALISCO "will allow the Mexican Navy to operate both in the territorial sea, and in the Exclusive Economic Zone of our country."
He explained that “it is a surface unit capable of developing operations under the trinomial concept, since it extends its maritime surveillance radio, being able to house on its decks a helicopter and a high-speed interceptor type vessel, which in as a whole, they reduce operating costs and increase their level of response and effectiveness ”.
The High Command also stressed that “in addition to the missions aimed at preserving the rule of law at sea, this vessel may also join the institutional efforts, in order to support the civilian population in cases of emergency, or to carry out search and rescue operations ”. In this regard, he stressed that "the Oceanic Patrol" JALISCO "is a symbol of Mexicanness, naval bearing and National strength."
When speaking, Mrs. Georgina Ventura Menchaca de Soberón, godmother of this new ARM unit “JALISCO” (PO-176) that was afloat, addressed the crew members, to whom the best externals wishes to always reach their destination well, after having done their duty, “protected by the best guidance that the stars can give them; as well as for the goodness of the marine elements in its path and, to the same extent, for its own capacity and preparation to face them ”.
He added that the “JALISCO” Patrol was conceived to fulfill the traditional mission of watching over our seas. "A task of broad national meaning, which is relevant for being performed precisely by Mexicans and Mexicans of good, members of the Secretariat of Navy-Navy of Mexico."
Likewise, as part of the launch protocol, the unit's godmother baptized this new vessel with the traditional rupture of a bottle of regional liquor in the bow of the hull; for this purpose he cut the thread with the ceremonial ax, which released a bottle of mezcal, in homage to this Oaxaca region, an act that signaled the beginning of the ship's descent until it was afloat, bathed for the first time in the waters of the Pacific Ocean, to begin its enlistment phase.
It is noteworthy that this institution has shipyards on both coastlines of the country. They design, build and repair ships for the Mexican Navy and other types of ships for the public and private sectors.
On July 20, 2019 the Mexican Navy-Navy Secretariat reported that at the Tampico Marine Shipyard based in Tampico, Tamaulipas, the ARM Ocean Patrol Launching “TABASCO” was held ”PO-168 , which will carry out its operations under the concept of trinomial, using a navalized helicopter, as well as an onboard interceptor patrol, to carry out patrol and surveillance within the territorial sea and the Exclusive Economic Zone, in order to maintain the Rule of Law at sea.
The launching ceremony of this unit was presided by Admiral José Rafael Ojeda Durán, Secretary of the Navy and High Command of the Mexican Navy, who was accompanied by Dr. Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, General Luis Crescencio Sandoval González, Secretary of the National defense; Mr. Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca, Governor of the State of Tamaulipas, as well as naval, civil and military authorities.
During this act the Admiral Secretary of the Navy affirmed that “at the end of his enlistment time, this unit will have to join the naval fleet of Mexico, to carry out deterrence, interception and surveillance patrols, as well as multinational exercises, instructional cruises, support to the civilian population and work to safeguard life at sea. It will serve our nation, with an advantage in its operability, which will allow it to remain for long periods of time in the Exclusive Economic Zone, without relying on logistic support on land. In addition to that it will have a helicopter and intercept vessel, which will make it a trinomial in the sea. ”
About the Marine Shipyard Number One, the Mexican Navy High Command said that “his experience as one of the most productive shipyards of this Institution, with a log of 104 ships built to date, has been once again manifest. These facilities, in addition to fulfilling their mission, have supported our country by generating an average of 2,500 direct and indirect jobs. ”

In her speech, Dr. Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller; Godmother of this ship of the Navy of Mexico gave a few words of good luck and hope for the first crew, “this ship will circumnavigate, will depart and whose crew will experience the taste of the sea, we wish them the best, the best winds, the best stars, few storms, few obstacles, but above all we wait for you back with love, where are your houses, your families, where there will always be a kiss, a hug ”.
The Oceanic Patrol ARM “TABASCO” PO-168 has a crew of 81 highly trained and trained elements to carry out search and rescue operations to safeguard human life, as well as actions to support the civilian population, protection of fishery resources, defense and protection of national waters, among other operations.
Among the characteristics of this unit, it is worth highlighting that it will have an autonomy of 8,650 nautical miles at a cruising speed, will have a transport capacity of 39 people, as well as with all the habitable compartments, in addition to a hangar and modular averaging system (means so that a helicopter is held on the flight deck).
It is noteworthy that the shipbuilding in Mexico has evolved significantly with the shipyards of Marina in both coastlines of the country, where its construction capacity is optimized, promoting employment and cutting-edge technological development, meeting the needs to safeguard national sovereignty. They design, build and repair ships for the Mexican Navy and other types of ships for the public and private sectors.
The Oceanic Patrol ARM "TABASCO" PO-168 in relation to its predecessors, has important changes such as the improvement of its stability and marine behavior that makes it more resistant to the conditions that occur at sea.
In this way, by continuing to forge the national history with the construction of this type of ships, the Federation's Naval Power is strengthened, to cover the institutional needs of afloat units, which drives the development of 100% labor.
