Universal Shipbuilding Corp

In 2002 Hitachi and NKK Corp. merged their shipbuilding operations together to form Universal Shipbuilding Corp. The joint venture, Universal Shipbuilding Corp. operated as Japan's second-largest shipbuilding concern and was spun off in October 2002.

Universal Shipbuilding Corporation produces a wide variety of unique, reliable and competitive vessels using advanced technology developed at our five shipyards and technical research center, which boasts one of the largest towing tanks in Japan. Painstaking investigation of industry and market trends ensures that our ships are designed to satisfy a diversity of customer needs. Our products include large-sized merchant ships such as tankers and bulk carriers; naval vessels such as destroyers and landing craft; and ships for government agency service, including icebreakers and patrol vessels.

Taking advantage of its sophisticated shipbuilding facilities, among the largest such works in Japan, the company has established its reputation by developing and delivering a succession of technically advanced vessels. Three of our more recent achievements are the “Malacca-Type” VLCC, the “Unimax Ore” 300,000-dwt-type ore carrier and the “New Castle Maxim” 200,000-dwt-type bulk carrier.

Universal Shipbuilding meets complex requirments for naval ships, ships for government agencies, and small-sized ships of many types. In addition to research focusing on defense and coast-guard vessels. Research targets developments in the areas of high performance new-concept ships, research ships, and enviromental protection systems.

The company’s defense equipment capabilities are far-reaching. Among the products supplied are mine-sweeping equipment, autopilot systems, underway supply equipment, boat davit, unmanned surface vehicle and amphibious vehicle. Ongoing defense-related research and development programs include program for the future mine sweeping system, program for the stealth fleet systems for the future naval vessels and program for the new amphibious vehicle.

Universal System and Machinery Co., Ltd. was established since July 1, 2009 as 100% subsidiary of Universal Shipbuilding Corporation to devote itself to further development of defense and mechatronics business.
