Israel Shipyards Ltd was established in Haifa Bay in 1959 as a Government-owned shipyard. In the late 1960s ISL was the first in the Western world to design and build a fast attack missile boat, the SAAR 4 class, for the Israeli Navy. The SAAR 4s successfully defend Israel's coast during the 1973 war.
In the late 1970s the Shipyard starts the design and building of Merchant Ships and Floating Docks. And in the late 1980s ISL began design of the SHALDAG, a unique Fast Patrol Craft. In 1990 the SAAR was upgraded to the SAAR 4.5 class, some of them with helicopter carrying capability.
In April 1995 ISL was privatized, offering a wider variety of designs and experiencing rapid growth. In the mid-1990s the SHALDAG was introduced to the market, becoming a popular design that would eventually be upgraded several times and offer three types. ISL used it’s infrastructure in 2003 for heavy metal industrial works, and delivery various project such as the passengers landing bridges for Ben-Gurion airport, Post Panamax container cranes, thermal desalination facility etc.
In 2007 ISL became the owner and operator of the only private port in Israel. The year 2009 saw the establishment of Noble Energy shore base facility which include the fabrication of large marine steel structure as well as off-shore logistic services. In 2017 came the completion of a full-scale turn-key project, including building of 12 vessels and extensive transfer of technology (ToT).
In 2018 ISL launched a brand new model, the SA’AR S-72, a modern medium-size corvette with innovative propulsion system. In 2019 ISL launched a brand new design, the OPV 45, a multi-mission modern medium size OPV, with special care for maximum versatility, as well as human engineering. Also in 2019, ISL launched a brand new Syncrolift, capable lifting up to 3000 tons.
