Iraqi Workers Communist Party
Established in July 1993 through a merger of communist groups, the party clashed with the KDP and PUK in northern Iraq in recent years and was officially deemed an illegal party. Is closely linked to the Iranian party of the same name. The group did not participate in the London conference in December 2002 and opposed the U.S.-led war in Iraq in addition to the coalition's presence in Iraq and the Governing Council, on the grounds that it was "imposed." In February 2004, Manama's "Akhbar al-Khalij" reported that the group joined other secular parties including the KDP and PUK in establishing a unified front "to restrain the religious trend" -- in an apparent reference to the appearance of Shi'a groups from southern Iraq. The group publishes the newspaper "Bopeshawa."
