AGI Shiraz [Golden Ship]
Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan visited the latest home-made equipment of Iran's new under-construction warship, “Shiraz”, Fars News Agency (FNA) reported 21 November 2020. During his visit to Iran's first marine zone in the Southern port city of Bandar Abbas, Dehqan was briefed about the construction of Shiraz warship.
While expounding on the latest situation of manufacturing “Shiraz” warship, Khanzadi said, “Presently, construction operation of this surveillance warship is underway, so that construction of the structure of this new vessel, which enjoys specific features, has been completed.” The surveillance vessel is a little smaller than Iran's first home-made destroyer, Jamaran, in size. No detailed information has yet been released by the Iranian defense ministry about the new warship.
“Shiraz” Surveillance Warship has the necessary capabilities in the field of radar detection, telecommunications, sonar and management of various emissions in electromagnetic warfare, he said, adding, “Moreover, the Warship is equipped with other capabilities such as knowing frequency band, identifying various parameters of radar and radio waves as well as identifying enemy’s telecommunication systems which is considered an important issue in the field of information warfare.”
Jamaran was launched in late February 2010. The Mowj-Class vessel has a displacement of around 4,000 tons and is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities and is armed with a variety of anti-ship, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles. Also, Damavand, the second-generation and highly-equipped Iranian destroyer, joined the country's Northern fleet in March in a ceremony participated by General Dehqan, Secretary of Iran's National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani, Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari and Head of the Self-Sufficiency Jihad Department of the Iranian Navy Rear Admiral Ali Qolamzadeh.
In an interview with FNA at the time, Qolamzadeh elaborated on the features and specifications of Damavand, and said: “The 7-story destroyer is 90 meters in length and armed with advanced anti-surface and anti-subsurface weapons and air defense systems to defend itself.” Noting that the home-made 'Asr' phased array radar system, capable of detecting and identifying targets with a radar cross section of 4 meters in a 200km distance, had been mounted on the destroyer, he said, “Base-controlled radars, a highly advanced propulsion and command-and-control systems which enjoy high power and capability are only a few of the systems mounted on Damavand destroyer.”
Qolamzadeh said in addition to combat operations, Damavand could also be used for training and naval missions, adding that it had been equipped with systems to be used for electronic warfare. “The operational radius of Damavand is so vast that it can sufficiently be used for all naval missions in the Caspian Sea,” he noted.
The Golden Ship, which is part of the Shiraz project, is essentially an intelligence-reconnaissance ship tasked with covering the fleet and other ships during operation. Electronic warfare and countering electronic warfare , identifying enemy targets and creating false targets, covering for other insider ships, detecting targets and monitoring the enemy are among the tasks of the Golden Ship. Talaieh intelligence and reconnaissance ship (Shiraz project) is being built in the factories of the first naval base of the army located in Shahid Bahonar port facilities.
In the first half of 1392, in the satellite images of Shahid Bahonar facilities, structural parts under construction were seen, which were initially thought to be the next ship of Jamaran class; But in the special program of Soraya on the occasion of Army Navy Day in December 2013, it was announced that this structure belongs to a research ship the size of Jamaran class. In the following years, it was officially announced that this structure belongs to the intelligence ship "Shiraz", whose mission is to carry out intelligence operations such as reconnaissance, interception and other matters. In the last two years, the name of Shiraz has become a project and this ship is now called "Talaieh".
Talaieh (Shiraz) intelligence reconnaissance ship was under construction at Bahonar wharf. The name "Talaieh" belongs to the border area in the west of Khuzestan province (Hoveyzeh city), which is one of the operational areas of eight years of holy defense.
The structure of the Golden Ship is the same as the Jamaran class structure with different superstructures, therefore it can be considered a subgroup of the Jamaran class. According to some information such as the number of blocks identical to Jamaran and Damavand, there is a hypothesis that this structure was initially (Wave 3) and a warship and before the assembly of the blocks, it was decided to change the use. Special end), the superstructure changes in general.
Jamaran class ships are not different from Alvand class ships in terms of dimensions and in spite of different details, they are similar to their predecessors in general and only Talaieh information ship has a different superstructure as a subgroup.
One of the main reasons for the problems of Jamaran class ships includes less weapons than other similar ships and lack of helicopter hangar, remaining faithful to the general plan of Alvand class means that there is an empty space of about 6 meters in front of the command bridge and space behind the chimney of 11 meters in Jamaran, Damavand 2 and Dena ships and the same space is about 16 meters in Sahand and Damavand 3 ships. These two spaces, and especially the space of about six meters in front of the command bridge, cannot be used by itself due to the dimensions of the weapons Iran has; On the other hand, anything installed in this part of the ship has a negative effect on the radar cross section of the ship facing.
The Golden Ship is the only structure in the wave class that has a helicopter hangar due to the aggregation of space at the front and rear of the ship. The best thing that can be done is to integrate the two spaces by moving the second and third decks forward, thus creating a space of more than 20 meters behind the chimney. This action has been done in Talaieh ship and with the aggregation of spaces in this ship, a helicopter hangar has been installed so that the mentioned information ship is the only ship that has a hangar to carry a helicopter among the seven identified wave structures. Of course, in the golden ship, the pad has also been moved forward, which has created an empty space between the pad and the end. In any case, the Golden Ship shows that the spaces in the superstructure of the Jamaran class ships can be combined for better use.
The first use that can be made of the space accumulated behind the chimney is to install a helicopter hangar like the Golden Ship, and due to the sufficient length to cover the length of a helicopter such as AB-212, it is no longer necessary to install a retractable part of the hangar; Of course, with the goal of accepting larger helicopters or saving space behind the chimney to use it for other purposes, part of the nest can still be retractable.
