Majid Air Defense System responds to the growing need of Iran and other countries in the region to deal with low-altitude threats, including small birds and cruise missiles, which can be installed on various platforms.
One of the largest exercises of the Armed Forces in recent years is scheduled to be held this week with the participation of various air defense units of the IRGC, the army and other affiliated forces, and the testing of various indigenous systems will be one of its most important parts. Among the new systems that seem to be used in this exercise is the "Majid" air defense system, which is one of the most up-to-date short-range air defense equipment in the country in the field of surface-to-air.
This system was exposed to the public for the first time in the parade on April 19 of this year, and during that parade, an image with a not very good quality of this system was published. But in recent days, better and more images of the system firing and targeting a target drone have been published by it, with this information, we can now introduce this system with more details and vision.
In recent years, the development of unmanned flight systems, especially quadcopters, stray ammunition, as well as the development of low-altitude low-flying capability for helicopters and warplanes has necessitated a low-altitude air defense system to deal with new threats at various points. The world is felt. The use of anti-aircraft cannons with a combination of guided ammunition and optical and radar guidance, development of shower missiles and even the development of direct energy defense systems (lasers, etc.) are among the works done in this section to strengthen this ring. It is defensive.
Around our country, the issue of increasing the existence of unmanned aerial vehicles, increasing the purchase of cruise missiles and air capabilities, both by government actors and some terrorist groups, has been observed more in recent years. In fact, Majid system is an almost simple, inexpensive answer with high mobility and use in different platforms.
According to the new images, two missiles of the new system, probably called AD-08, have been installed on the back of a desert tactical vehicle with a detection and guidance optical system. This means that the system in question can be transported and launched from the back of almost a van, and as a result, the enemy can be surprised from countless points. At the same time, when this set can be installed on a car in the desert class, there is clearly the ability to develop and install more of it on larger ground platforms, such as the types of old tanks in the country with a change of use, the product of which is It will be a moving defense layer for armored and mechanized units.
The range of this missile is about 8 km and with these descriptions, it is considered in the class of short-range systems. In the early stages of flight, the missile uses a low-smoke accelerator, which reduces the possibility of visually identifying the location of the system in conflict scenarios close to the battlefield.
The next important point about the features of Majid system is related to the detection and guidance systems of this missile, which is one of the most important points and features of a defense system. According to the images, next to the two cylinders carrying the missile, there is also an optical detection system that can passively search the surrounding space and aim and transfer information to the weapons system for target combat. But according to some technical studies and speculations - including the images of the April 19 parade mentioned above - the new radar system Kashif 99 can also be linked and feed the information of Majid defense system.
The Kashif-99 radar apparently, in addition to detecting small birds, also has the ability to detect cruise missiles, and this radar has the ability to detect a cruise missile with a cross-sectional area of one tenth of a square meter and a Mach 2 speed in a 30-kilometer range. The specifications of the above radar system show suitable numbers for air defense at low altitudes, and when this system is not available for any reason, the optical system in the Majid system can detect and track air targets without revealing the location of the system.
The missile used in the new system probably uses some kind of heat-sensitive guidance system or infrared imager. In the images released from the test of this missile system, and moments before hitting the target drone, an image of the missile's head was published for a few moments, which greatly increases the possibility of using infrared imaging systems in this missile. If this feature is used, it will be very difficult to disrupt it, considering that the missile not only seeks heat rejection but also seeks the pre-stored shape of the target in its memory.
Due to the use of this missile system in the final phase, it takes advantage of the forget-me-not firing situation and does not need to be guided by the launch unit until it hits the target. In terms of the mechanism of impact and destruction of the target, it should be said that this missile uses a direct collision mode to target.
The overall appearance of the missile is in some ways reminiscent of the projectile used in the RIT-116 system manufactured by the American company Raytheon. This system is used exclusively for close defense of warships of several Western countries and US allies and is considered a world-famous platform.
Due to its small size, Majid Air Defense System can be used in other uses in addition to ground discussion. For example, by assembling the missile carrier cylinders and adding a guidance system, all types of light and heavy vessels in the armed forces can be equipped with a reliable defense layer.
According to the efforts and experiences of experts in the relevant departments in the IRGC Air and Naval Forces, which resulted in the testing of the famous and modern system of the 3rd of Khordad (Global Hawk Hunter) on one of the IRGC missile launchers, we can expect other examples. Defense systems built in different parts of the defense industry, the possibility and conditions of testing and deployment on vessels in the armed forces of our country to find the dimensions and features of the Majid system, will help even smaller vessels have this capability.
For example, the new generation of IRGC naval heavy missile launchers, which are based on the design of catamaran and have limited space for many missiles, can use this system for air defense. At the same time, given the size of the missile, there is a possibility of developing an air-to-air model, and it could be considered as an alternative to older missiles in the service of the Army Air Force.
