Bahman 57mm SPAAG
The 57-mm Bahman [not Bachmann] is apparently the installation of the turret of the old decommissioned ZSU-57 on chassis KrAZ-6322. According to zoroasterian texts, Bahman means "Good Purpose" and it also means protector of animals. The name Bahman in the persian language means avalanche and it is also the 11th month of the year, equivelant to November.
Iran, focused on the creation of a layered air defense system, places special emphasis on the development of anti-aircraft artillery systems with integrated detection / target radar and automated fire control systems as an effective and inexpensive means of confrontation with low-flying targets, UAVs and cruise missiles Among them are works on the modernization of the Soviet ZSU-23-4 Shilka (which received a target tracking channel and integrated PU MANPADS), the development of a double-barreled 57-mm Bahman.
These guns are air-cooled, so after firing of 50 – 60 rounds in intensive mode guns have to cool down. These guns are fed from magazines. Each magazine holds four rounds. The ZSU-57-2 fires fragmentation-tracers against air targets and armor-piercing tracers against ground targets. Direct hit of a single 57-mm round caused destruction of a fighter or attack aircraft.
Since the 60s of the last century, 57-mm anti-aircraft guns C-60 and ZSU-57-2 were in service with Iran. According to some reports, in the 57-mm towed anti-aircraft guns, the outdated fire control system was replaced by an Iranian-made Skyguard MSA with an updated optical-electronic search and target tracking system.
The weight of the S-60 was 4,6 tons and it had a 4160mm long barrel with destinctive muzzle break and downfoldable shield. The S-60 gun is fixed to a four wheel carriage and it was also used against light armored ground vehicles in the ground support role. A S-60 battery generally consists of six guns, a fire-control radar, and a fire-control director. The earliest versions had a PUAZO-5 fire-control director and a SON-4 radar, however, improved director/radar combinations were used in subsequent years. The ammunition is fed in 4-round clips into the gun, the rate of fire was 105 to 120rpm, range was 6000m with radar guidance, 4000m with optical sights. China also built its version of the S-60 and called it Type 59 anti aircraft gun.
At the same time, in the decade since 2010, the outdated ZSU-57-2 is no longer shown at exercises and parades. Most likely, these self-propelled guns were transferred "deposited" or written off, which is explained by their moral obsolescence and physical wear and tear. In modern conditions, the effectiveness of 57-mm sparks mounted on a tank chassis is more than doubtful due to the lack of modern pickup and low practical rate of fire.
Nevertheless, in 2016, the Iranians demonstrated the Bahman SPAAG with two 57-mm guns on the KrAZ-6322 chassis. Most likely, this anti-aircraft gun is integrated with the Skyguard LMS, since otherwise there is no point in it, due to the low probability of hitting a rapidly moving target when manually installing sights.
The Thales Rapid Fire Air Defence system combines the CONTROLMaster 60 surveillance radar with the CONTROLView command and control module and the latest generation 40mm cased telescope ammunition ensure both precision attack and high firepower. The long-forgotten 57 mm caliber guns are being given a new lease on life in the Russian armed forces with a new such cannon raising admiring eyebrows everywhere. CRI "Petrel" developed in the interest of the military defense self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery system caliber 57 millimeters, surpassing the leading foreign counterparts. With a rate of fire of 300 rounds per minute and a horizontal range of 16 kilometers this gun is an ideal weapon against all types of aircraft and armored vehicles, including tanks.
