According to the leaders of Sikkim Democratic Front the purposes and objectives of the party are to be sticked to the Indian constitution and law and to maintain integrity, sovereignty, equality of the country. It aims to provide to the people of Sikkim all sorts of advantages provided by government to bring them to the level of all. The chief target of SDF is to prevail peace, tranquility, harmony and satisfaction among all sections of people thus bringing to their life luxury and prosperity.
In May 2016, after the BJP led NDA formed its first government in Assam, a new alliance called the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) was formed with BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma as its convener. The Chief Ministers of the north eastern states of Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland too belong to this alliance. Thus, the Sikkim Democratic Front joined the NDA led NEDA.
As the biggest political party in Sikkim SDF has committees from grass root levels to the state level to make its plans and projects rich the common people through these steps. SDF has mass organizations like- Youth Front, Women's wing, and student front, labour front, scheduled tribe and caste welfare front etc.The day is not far when a sense of new thought, regard for a new change, revolutionary enthusiasm, love and unbreakable kinship with the people will transform Sikkim into a 'naya and sukhi Sikkim'. This is my conviction.” It is because of such sustained struggle of the SDF that Sikkim is regarded one of the best small states in India, so far as Panchayati Raj is concerned.
The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) led by Pawan Kumar Chamling on 14 May 2004 returned to power in the Himalayan state for a third time in a row winning all seats but one in the 32-member Assembly. Declaring that the people's mandate was the victory of the vision and ideology of the SDF, Chamling said ''Now that we are voted back to power, our responsibilities increased.... We will make Sikkim a model state now." The result showed that the people of Sikkim rejected the 'casteist and opportunistic forces', he said.
The lone constituency it lost was the Sangha seat which went to Tshering Lama of the Congress. The SDF also won the lone Lok Sabha seat of the state where both Assembly and Lok Sabha elections were held simultaneously. SDF's Nakul Das Rai defeated Biraj Adhikari of Congress with a margin of 1,25,188 votes.
On the 23rd Anniversary of Government Formation of Sikkim Democratic Front on 12 December 2017, Pawan Chamling stated "The unprecedented development that has taken place in Sikkim in the last 23 years is tangible and vivid if you compare it with the scenario in the State before 1994 as also with other states of the Country. Today, we can say that we have been successful in fulfilling the basic minimum needs of our people; and this I consider it to be our greatest achievement. I also emphasized that it is not only the data and records that show the progress made; but our achievements have been factual and evident. The fruits of development have reached the homes of every citizen, who has been guaranteed opportunity, comfort and happiness. Our people-centric Government has ensured the fulfilment of Millennium Development Goals. I can therefore, vouch that no Sikkimese is among the millions in the world who suffer from hunger and of being homeless."

With our pro-people policies, SDF has been able to win the hearts of the Sikkimese people. The very fact that we have enjoyed the people’s mandate for five consecutive times speaks about the popularity of our party."
