Helicopter Unit 155
The 155 Helicopter Unit is the oldest flying unit of the Air Force station, Tezpur. It undertook search and rescue missions, reconnaissance and communication duties during 1971 war. Between 1990 and 2003 the unit flew about 13,000 hours for casualty evacuation and communica-tion duties and saved umpteen lives. It carved a niche for itself in casualty evacuation. On an average, the unit is called upon to undertake at least ten casualty evacuation missions from isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh and Indo-Bangla border posts every month. The unit also flew extensively when Orissa was devastated by super-cyclone in 1999 and in the flood relief operations in Assam in 2000. The unit, popularly known as Hovering Angels has proved to be the lifeline for the people and troops in this region. In 2003 the unit was commanded by Wg Cdr AS Pathania who is the eighteenth commanding officer. The unit, which entered into 36th year of raising, also carries civil and military dignitaries into and out of the remote regions, like the hills of Arunachal Pradesh. It also acts as an air-bridge to connect people living across the hills with those across the Brahmputra river and its numerous tributaries.
