Corps of Military Police (CMP)

The term 'red berets' is synonymous with the personnel of the elite Corps of Military Police (CMP), since all ranks of this Corps adorn the exclusive red berets alongwith white belts to distinguish themselves from other Corps of Army. The role of this Corps is primarily to assist Army formations in maintaining a high standard of discipline of its troops, prevent breaches of various rules and regulations and to assist in the preservation of high morale of all ranks of the formation.

The 'red berets' have been performing yeoman's service to various formations conducting relentless counter insurgency (CI) operations in the state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). One such unit is the Delta Force Provost Unit which is deployed in the district of Doda. The area is notorious for its rugged, inhospitable terrain apart from an unusually large concentration of terrorists of various 'tanzeems'.

This unit was raised in July 1994 and formed an integral part of the elite Counter Insurgency Force; Delta which formally came into being on September 6, 1994 with the sole purpose of conducting CI operations in the district of Doda. With its headquarters located at Dharmund, near Batote, its detachments are strewn all over the vast area of responsibility (AOR) of Delta Force which encompasses an area of more than 11,600 sq kms. The organisation includes three decentralised sections of one JCO and ten ORs each, which are deployed to look after the AORs of 4, 9 and 11 RR sectors respectively.

The personnel of the Provost Unit are also deployed along the National Highway 1A and 1B which are the main lifelines of sustenance to the Valley and Doda district. Not only are these roads notorious for sharp, steep and hair pin bends over rugged and mountainous terrain, but are also vulnerable to terrorists attacks. They are also prone to frequent landslides and avalanches during monsoons and winters. More than three thousand vehicles of all types ply on National Highway (NH) 1A and 1B every day.
