Batumi
Batumi is the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Ajaria (which forms part of Georgia). It is situated on the south-east coast of the Black Sea. The population of Batumi is 140.000 (1991). Batumi was probably named from a Greek word "batkhos", which means "deep". The climate is warm subtropical, with average annual precipitation 2500 mm. Batumi is an important port town. Oil is exported from Batumi, which is the end of Baku pipe-line.
At the same time the export of tea, citrus and other products from the region by sea plays an important role in the economy of the town. In 1878, after 300 years of Turkish power, Batumi passed into the hands of Russians.
Batumi became the capital of Ajaria in 1921. The importance of Batumi as a port town increased with the opening of the frontier between Georgia and Turkey at Sarpi (20 km from Batumi).
