A.D. 1274 - Second Council of Lyons
The fourteenth ecumenical council was held at Lyons in 1274 under pope Gregory X., for the reestablishment of the Christian dominion in the Holy Land and the reunion of the Greek and Latin churches ; but the whole result was unsatisfactory. About 500 bishops were present; the council decreed the procession of the Holy Ghost from the Father and the Son, and established the regulation still in force by which the car dinals are shut up in conclave when a pope is to be elected.
