S-500 Long-Range SAM

Russia and Turkey will jointly produce the next generation S-500 aerial missile defense system, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on 18 May 2019. The United States, a military ally in the NATO alliance, has threatened sanctions against any country that purchases Russian defense systems. Turkish-US relations became strained after Turkey pushed forward with the purchase of Russia's S-400 missile defense system. "There is absolutely no question of (Turkey) taking a step back from the S-400s purchase. That is a done deal," Erdogan said. "There will be joint production of the S-500 after the S-400."

Russia continues to develop S-400-like systems. In this context, it is known that the S-400s will be followed by the mass production of the S-500, which is considered more advanced. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave the green light on the S-500 and said "maybe after the S-400, we will look into the S-500 issue." The S-400 and the S-500 have different design philosophies, the latter being a particular system for intercepting missiles.

The next-generation S-500 missiles can capture interstate ballistic missiles with the ability to hit distant and high targets. The S-500 also has the ability to hit aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and other aircraft. The S-500 can hit targets at a distance of 600 kilometers, and the supersonic 10 ballistic targets can hit at a speed of 7 kilometers per second. The S-500s are able to hit hypersonic rockets at an altitude of 27 kilometers.

On numerous occasions, Turkey has repeatedly stressed its decisive position on the S-400 air-defense missile system deal with Russia. Regarding the purchase as a necessity in order to fortify its defense systems, Ankara will not accept any outside intervention regarding its decision. Officials have also made it clear that it has made the purchase with due consideration of the country's immediate security needs. Even when the U.S. State Department and an American NATO general in Europe uttered threats against Turkey to exclude the country from the F-35 fighter jet program and stall the delivery of jets to Turkey, along with possible sanctions, the highest office of the country again expressed Turkey's commitment to the S-400 deal.

"Turkey will not turn back from its deal to purchase S-400 missile defense systems from Russia," President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on March 08,2019, adding that Ankara may subsequently look into buying S-500 systems. "We concluded the S-400 issue, signed a deal with the Russians, and will start co-production. Later, we may work on S-500s," Erdogan added. In an interview with Kanal 24, Erdogan said that the U.S. should not try to "discipline" Turkey through trade measures. If it does, he emphasized, Turkey has its own measures prepared. One of the measures the president alluded to was the U.S.' intention to exclude Turkey from the generalized system of preferences (GSP). "It's done. There will never be a point of turning back. This would not be ethical, it would be immoral. " Erdogan said.

President Erdogan said that Turkey is still open to buying Patriot systems from the United States but only if the conditions are suitable, and he added that Ankara may seek a deal to procure S-500 systems from Moscow later. Turkey negotiated the purchase of the Patriot system but backed down due to its high price and also especially after the U.S. refused to share the technical specifications of the system. As Russia met Turkeys expectations in terms of price, delivery, co-production and technology transfer, Ankara decided to purchase the S-400 air defense system. Any ideal co-production deal, be it for the S-400 or a NATO-compatible system, should include certain novelties that Turkish defense firms like ASELSAN or ROKETSAN would really gain new design and production capabilities.

Yuri Borisov, former Deputy Defense Minister of the Russian Federation, said that the ongoing 5th generation multi-purpose missile defense system S-500 could easily destroy targets at all altitudes. According to the price / efficiency criterion, Borisov said that these systems are 2 to 2.5 times more advantageous than their competitors abroad. The S-500 system is capable of destroying medium-range, fast tactical missiles, as well as missiles in close space. Russian experts, along with S-500 systems, rivals countries of technology will go beyond 15-20 years, says.

It has a response time of less than 4 seconds (S-400 is at least 10 sec.) .Patriot is 90 seconds and requires satellite. With a response time of 9-10 seconds, the S-400 can handle a maximum of six targets up to a range of 400 km, while the S-500 is capable of targeting up to 600 km out of simultaneous engagement and 10 ballistic missiles at a response time of 3-4 seconds.
