New Generation Floreal Frigate (NG2F)

In addition to contributing to Mistral LHD programs and the Brave logistic support vessel project in cooperation with DCNS, STX France’s Saint-Nazaire shipyard also proposed its own range of frigates and corvettes. This effort began with the New-Generation Surveillance Frigate, a modernised version of the eight Floreal-class vessels delivered to the French and Moroccan Navies in the 1990s and 2000s.

Reference builder of complex ships, STX France is renowned also for its activity on the naval ships market with products ranging from OPVs to LPDs including frigates. STX France has built a total of 8 units of the Floreal Class Frigate for the French and Moroccan navies. Based on this sea proven design reputed for its large autonomy and robustness, STX France proposed a new upgraded version called the New Generation Floreal Frigate (NG2F).

One distinct feature of this ship is the bow, which is perpendicular to the waterline as opposed to the angled or “raked” bow common on most ships. This vertical “Plumb Bow” reduces drag and improves the efficiency of the hull, maximizing its speed potential. For the same size and displacement, a ship with a Plumb Bow will travel faster, require less effort and fuel, thus improving the ship’s range. From the existing sea proven design, the NG2F Frigate has been upgraded to a top service speed of 25 knots, a stealthy superstructure and state of the art weapon system capabilities to conduct anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare and electronic warfare operations. The embarked 10 t class helicopter and associated facilities authorise her to ensure extended operational capability.
