1st Mechanized Brigade

The 1st Mechanized Brigade [1. mechanizovaná Brigade] insignia is the Lynx, an expression of the parallels between the characteristics of the animal and battle characteristics of a light brigade (the speed, flexibility, strength, endurance, courage, ...). The green background color symbolizes the jurisdiction (relationship) to the ground forces of the Army. Framing is gold, and on the top edge of the shield is a golden text 1. mb of TOPOLCANY. The 1st Mechanized Brigade is stationed at Topolcany in the Nitra region on the right bank of the river surrounded by mountains Tríbec Nitra and Považský Inovec. The first written mention of the town was in the year 1173 AD. The city has around 28,800 inhabitants, who are nicknamed Žochári. The town is known for wood, clothing, electronics and food industries. The city is also famous for the production of beer.

The Jaselské barracks was established at Topolcany on 15 January 1938. In in 1968 the 13th Tank Division moved to Topolcany. From 1950 to 1994 the 13th Tank Division organization consisted of: 13th, 15th and 16th Tank Regiments, 103rd Mechanised Regiment, 3rd School Tank Battalion, 361st Artillery Regiment. In January 1993 it became part of the Army of the Slovak Republic. On 01 November 1994 the 1st Army Corps was rearranged to organisationally consist of: 1st joining battalion Topolcany; 1st a battalion Topolcany; 1st Medical Battalion Topolcany; 12st brigade of Levice; 11st base, Martin; 1st battalion of technical security, Martin; 13st mechanizovaná Brigade of Bratislava; 1st exploratory battalion Bratislava; 1st battalion of material security of Hlohovec. On 01 April 2000 the unit was reorganized Domobranu Army SR. After the abolition of the Home Guard on 01 October 2002 the Army of the Slovak Republic [ASR] Light Brigade Topolcany was established. On 10 January 2006 the Light Brigade was renamed the First Mechanized Brigade.

Currently is deployed in the crew to Topolcany. It consists of the following departments and units:

  • 11th mechanized battalion Martin
  • 12th mechanized battalion Nitra
  • 13th mechanized battalion Levice
  • logistical support Battalion Topolcany
  • support command of the Rota, Slovakia
  • Engineer Company Martin
  • Exploration Company Levice

The main task is to take a combat Brigade position anywhere in the world, in a relatively short time, to the conduct of tactical operations in the full extent of the Alliance. The primary mission of 1 mb is to participate in the performance of tasks of Defense and the protection of vital interests of the Slovak Republic and its allies before military and non-military threats from the leadership of combat and non-combat operations. With regard to the organisational structure and armament is predestined to conduct combat operations against enemy units are easily obrneným in high pace.

Mission of 1 mb is to prepare and be:

  • ready for performance of the tasks of the State on the territory of the Slovak Republic, lead anywhere defense combat operations without limits, be able to act as independent brigádne grouping, be prepared for the implementation of the movements of ideal or unanticipated tasks
  • ready to provide the forces and means to carry out relief operations with a focus on:
  • the fight against terrorism and to be able, in association with other basic components to perform tasks in destroying the paramilitary groups and for the protection and defence of the objects of special importance and other important objects,
  • deployed subordinate unit (shortly after the announcement) anywhere on the territory of the Slovak Republic and the provision of military support to the authorities of the State administration and local government in the resolution of crisis situations and in conjunction with civil organizations involved in addressing environmental emergencies and natural disasters,
  • ready to provide the forces and means to carry out peacekeeping stabilisation operations,
  • ready for deployment or deploy the specified part of the forces and means in accordance with the decision of the competent authorities of the State to combat operations, according to the commitments of the Slovak Republic to the international organizations.

The BVP-2 is a tracked light armoured vehicle for infantry combat, the Slovak version of the Russian origin BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle. This vehicle is still in service with the Slovak army mechanized troops. The basic weapon is the BVP-2, which meets the requirements of the Brigade on the line of attack-defence operations and in any field and anywhere in the world. The combat vehicles, artillery, anti-tank supported another war reconnaissance units forming the combat support Brigade. Bessemer (BVP-2) is a tracked combat vehicle that combines armament, protection and high manoeuvrability. The vehicle is intended for the increase in the mobility-impaired, palebnej power and the protection of the infantry on the battlefield. Combatant handling vehicle consists of 10 persons. The BVP-2 crew consists of a commander, driver and operator. It carries seven persons equipped organic war of the cooperative. Between the years 1987 to 1989, Czechoslovakia produced a total of 344 pieces of BMP-2 in the basic version.
