Ing 2 Göta Engineers
The Göta Engineers, Ing 2, is Sweden's only engineer regiment. The regiment recruits and trains officers and national service personnel for engineer units which possess specialist skills in high quality field work in support of both national and international missions. In times of emergency or extreme stress, the regiment is there to assist the community, with help from the Home Guard where it is needed. Such occasions could arise in the event of severe storms or flooding. Ing 2 can also help, for example, in extinguishing forest fires, replacing collapsed bridges and in the clearance and disposal of unexploded munitions or other explosive devices.
Ing 2 has the task of training, and maintaining at a high state of readiness, an international engineer company. The company is intended as a contribution to international crisis management within the framework of EU, NATO or UN led operations. The company is to be ready to deploy at 30 days notice.
The Göta Engineers train national service personnel annually. Soldiers are trained in a variety of professional specialisations such as sapper (fieldwork engineer), heavy machinery driver, EOD specialist (bomb disposal), cook or medical technician. Training and exercising make use of equipment such as fixed and floating bridge systems, armoured vehicles, command and control systems and the latest mine clearance and explosive ordnance disposal systems. Ing 2 also includes the Swedish Military Engineer School, FarbS. This means that Ing 2 is responsible for the training of regular and reserve officers in aspects of engineering for the whole of the Swedish Armed Forces.
The Göta Engineers' development activities include the development of new systems for communication, demining and bomb disposal as well as new types of units and field manuals.
The regiment's Småland section has the task of managing and training Home Guard units and non-governmental organisations as well as developing the organisation and tasks of Home Guard units. One of the tasks of the Home Guard is to relieve the front line forces of certain duties if the latter are required for active service, and to assume responsibility for the guarding of important installations and infrastructure. The Småland section works with the various authorities, organisations and municipalities in the county and provides support for the community in the event of emergencies such as flooding, severe storms and snowfalls, serious accidents or searching for missing persons.
