A 9 Artillery Regiment
The Artillery Regiment, A9, based in Boden, is the Swedish Armed Forces' competence centre for all aspects of indirect combat. The Artillery Regiment is the custodian of collective experience and expertise and is the centre for the development of techniques, methods and equipment for indirect combat, i.e. the use of long range precision munitions to engage targets to which there no direct line of sight. The Artillery Regiment also includes the Army Artillery School, ArtSS.
In conjunction with industry, A9 is developing a mobile precision artillery system known as ARCHER. The system uses precision-guided shells for extreme accuracy and is suitable for use both nationally and internationally. A9 also uses the weapons location radar ARTHUR (Artillery Hunting Radar), and is engaged in the further development of the system. ARTHUR is much in demand and is already in use by more than 20 countries. The system locates the origin of hostile fire and provides accurate intelligence for the control of own artillery.
A 9 has functional responsibility for close air support (CAS) within the Swedish Armed Forces. CAS is the NATO term for the process in which a forward air controller on the ground guides supporting aircraft in attacking enemy ground targets.
