Prince Radu
His Serene Highness [HSH] Prince Radu of Hohenzollern-Veringen was born as Radu Duda the 7th of June 1960 in Iasi, Romania, the son of professor René Duda and Dr. Gabriela Constandache. He married HRH Crown Princess Margarita of Romania (1996), was created Prince of Hohenzollern-Veringen (1999), and created Prince of Romania and HRH (2005). Prince Radu served as a Romanian Army Colonel (r), attended John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, 2004 Program for Senior Executives in National and International Security, and was awarded a PhD in Military Science (2006). Prince Radu played a major role in the official visits undertaken by His Majesty King Michael I in 1997 and 2002 for the integration of Romania in NATO. The King visited the United Kingdom, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Luxembourg and The Netherlands, meeting with heads of state and government. Since 1997, Prince Radu has regularly accompanied The King on his visits and created the concept of the King's "Millennium Tour" in his country for the year 2000. In the company of his wife, Crown Princess Margarita, the Prince represents the Royal Family of Romania on various occasions.
Between September 2002 and September 2008, Prince Radu maintained an official position as Special Representative of the Romanian Government. The Government of Romania took the decision to appoint Radu, Prince of Hohenzollern-Veringen as a Special Representative of the Government for Integration, Co-operation and Sustainable Development. In this capacity, HSH Prince Radu holds the rank of a Minister. This function does not mean any political involvement and has no political consequences, but has connection with the major interests of Romania.
On the 9th of April 2009 from the gardens of the Elisabeta Palace, Prince Radu announced his intention to be a candidate for the Romanian Presidency. "The political left is in the Presidential pocket. Those on the right chose to ignore the project of The Royal House, believing that they would thus obtain political profit in the short term. This is a repetition of the mistake made in 1997. Normally, the effort to heal the Institutions of the Romanian State should unite the business community, civil society and the media around my project." It did not happen this way. However, 12% of Romanians believed differently. On 02 September 2009 Prince Radu announced his withdrawal from the race for the Presidency, with regret, but with hope for the future.
