11th Surface to Air Missiles Regiment “HOREA"
The 11th Surface-to-Air Missiles Regiment main task is the air defence of its Area of Responsibility, by increasing capabilities of all its forces, simultaneously with other activities concerning their training for reaching the appropriate operational readiness. By its given mission, forces and assets are ready and maintained within optimal parameters, being able to execute specific manoeuvres and to participate in the air defence of national territory.
The unit was created on 26th of March 1940, by the General Staff Order no. 13008, and called the 11th Antiaircraft Group. Established mainly based on antiaircraft guns batteries of the 4th Antiaircraft Group, the 11th Antiaircraft Group had the mission to provide antiaircraft defence of Brasov and Tohan (a sensitive point) areas . During the World War II, part of its forces and military equipment were moved to the front, with the mission to protect the deployed troops. By 1st October 1942, according to the General Staff Order no. 1342 /30.09.1942,the "Ardeal" Antiaircraft Group was established. This Group included the 11th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion, created through the transformation of 11th Antiaircraft Group.
After the war (from September 1945 to June 1949), the 11th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion was part of the Antiaircraft Artillery Training Center, starting a reorganization process, as all the other antiaircraft units. On July 1st 1949, according to the General Staff Order no. 45833, the forces and assets of the Training Centre of the Antiaircraft Artillery Officers School were split with the purpose to separate the Training Centre and the School and to transform the 11th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion in 11th Antiaircraft Artillery Regiment. The Regiment included in its structure subunits of the Training Centre and Officers School.
Since 1963, the unit has been equipped with surface-to-air missiles, starting a new organizing process and adopting new antiaircraft combat procedures, for the accomplishment of the mission. Initially, the Regiment was equipped with DVINA surface-to-air missile systems, using 20DP SAMs, and later on with VOLHOV surface-to-air missiles systems, provided with 20DSU and 5Ia23 SAMs. Between 1966 and 1990, the regiment executed combat launches in the Capu Midia Firing Range and in a firing range of the former Soviet Union, constantly achieving meritorious scores.
After 1990, the Regiment has executed training and combat launches in Capu Midia Firing Range with both missiles and antiaircraft machine guns, constantly succeed to reach its training goals. Since 2003, according to the Ministry of Defence order no. M.S. 31 / 21.02.2003, the 11th Antiaircraft Missiles Regiment has changed its name in the 11th Surface to Air Missiles Regiment.
