1st Surface to Air Missiles Brigade
“General Nicolae Dascalescu”
The 1st SAM Brigade is located approximately 14 km from Bucharest downtown, in Vlasia fields. Main task of the 1st SAM Brigade is Bucharest's air defense. The 1st SAM Brigade responsibilities area covers approximately 20.000 sq. km. in four districts (Giurgiu, Ialomita, Dambovita and Calarasi). The Brigade fulfills its combat mission in cooperation with subordinates units deployed in operational locations.
Between 1959-1961 the 143rd and 261st Air Defense Regiments received in their inventory their first surface-to-air missiles and became the 18th and 19th Air Defense Regiments. On August 1st, 1973 the first Romanian surface-to-air missiles large unit of was set up inside the headquarters of air defense by mixing the 18th and 19th Regiments, forming the 1st Surface to Air Missile Brigade. In 1995, by taking control over four Neva SAM battalions and one technical battalion, the brigade became the 1st SAM Mixed Brigade.
In 1995, the Brigade was conferred the honorific name “General Nicolae Dascalescu”, the commander of the first air defense regiment, who by his bravery acts and because he identified himself with a common warrior, who loved, heartened and rewarded the soldiers, he was nicknamed “the soldier general”. In 1998, starting with August 1st , the 1st Mixed SAM Brigade became the 1st SAM Brigade, by removing the Neva battalions from the brigade subordination.
