Robot 17 / RBS 17

RBS 17 is a Swedish modification of the famous anti-tank missile AGM-114 Hellfire. The modification was carried out by Bofors. AGM-114 is used primarily from helicopters or UAVs, for example, the same MQ-1C Gray Eagle that Ukraine will receive from the United States with these missiles. But RBS 17 is used as an anti-ship and can be launched both from ships and from land, from a fairly compact launchers that can be transported or mounted on mobile platforms.

Robot 17 is used by units within the Amphibious Regiment to make it more difficult for an opponent to enter ships in the Swedish archipelago or ports. The robot has a very good precision and can operate from land and from ships to other destinations, both on the water and on land.

Basically, Robot 17 is an American Hellfire AGM-114C, which has proven effective in combat. The American robot has since been modified by the Swedish industry, to suit Swedish conditions, and then named Robot 17. Robot 17 is controlled just like other Hellfire variants, by the reflection from a laser that illuminates the target. The amphibious fire units are the unit whose task is, with the help of an illuminator, to illuminate the target for which the robot is intended.

The robot system is today transported by warship and carried ashore by amphibious soldiers. Both robots and illuminators can be mounted on boats and vehicles, which is something that is being investigated as part of the development of the system.

Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde announced 02 June 2022 "Sweden will send anti-ship missiles, anti-tank weapons and 12.7 mm rifles including ammunition to ????. This 4th support package also includes financial contribution to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Total amount includes more than 95 million euros."

It will fit perfectly, says Lieutenant Colonel Joakim Paasikivi. Naval missile robots are something Ukraine specifically asked for. Robot 17 is a very capable system that will help increase Ukraine's ability to fight back against Russia's illegal, unprovoked invasion, he says. It will play an important role for the Ukrainian defense, according to Lieutenant Colonel Joakim Paasikivi. The entire system is very agile and will cover a gap in the Coast Guard. When the landing craft are on their way to the shore, they shoot, he says. It is especially in Odessa that the weapons system can make a difference, says Paasikivi. It is excellent for defending and making Odessa safer.

The RBS 17 / AGM-114 Hellfire with a warhead weighing 9 kg and a range of 9,000 m is not the same missile that can sink the cruiser "Moscow" , for large ships something like the same RBS 15, Harpoon , Naval Strike Missile or R-360 "Neptune" is needed. RBS 17 is rather an addition to Brimstone and Bayraktar TB2 grenade bombs, a weapon to hunt down Russian speedboats and landing craft, cover the coast and crossings, and use anti-tank missiles if necessary.
