Marine Battalion No. 1 / Batalhao de Fuzileiros nº 1

Given the new tasks assigned to the Marines, after the end of combat missions in the various theatres of war of the former Portuguese Overseas Provinces in Africa, it was necessary to restructure the Battalions of Marines who were part of the Corps.

After several structural adaptations observed in subsequent years, by order No. 49/90 of 17 July of the Admiral Chief of staff of the Navy (ALM CEMA) having regard to directives laid down on the armed forces (FA) relating to the restructuring, resizing and refit was in October 15, 1990 disabled the battalion of Marines No. 3 (BF3). On the same day was created a new unit, reduced to two companies of Marines (CF) and a command Group and services (GCS), which took the name marine Battalion nº 1 (BF1). This designation was inherited from another unit to whom was entrusted with the Mission of military police and Navy that was renamed the Naval Police Unit (UPN).

Since its inception, the BF1 has arranged Sections and teams to guarnecerem the naval units (UN) in commissions in the Azores, with the security mission survey teams enabled by the ship itself. Whereas in the current and emerging strategic environment, increased needs for garnish the UN with security groups, or within the framework of the permanent national commitments, either within the European Union (EU), NATO or Bilateral cooperation, was created in the structure of the BF1, the Platoon of approach-PELBOARD.

Finally, whereas in the current strategic environment, the methods that have been used by transnational terrorism, came to change the security requirements, it has become necessary to create measures to respond to these new threats. Thus arose a little all over the world the concept of Force Protection which, in its genesis, is an integrated system of security, designed to protect resources and by applying planned and integrated with other existing security systems, in particular those of anti-terrorism and counter-terrorism, of information (Intelligence), physical security and personal protection. In this context, the BF1 in conjunction with the UPN, currently under the same command in experimental scheme and in order to generate synergies, has been developing integrated actions that in its entirety require the adoption of measures for Force Protection.

The battalion of Marines No. 1 (BF1) competes, in particular:

• Ensure or enforce safe means of military installations or national belonging to NATO in dependence of the Navy, when determined superiorly.
• Ensure the strengthening of the Light Battalion of landing (BLD), when necessary.
• Ensure the strengthening of the garrisons of ships, when necessary.

The BF1 comprises:

• The company of Marines No. 11 (CF11)
• The company of Marines No. 12 (CF12)
• The peloton of approach (PELBOARD)
