Royal Norwegian Navy - Activities 2014

In a period in 2014 Norway had the lead of two NATO's standing maritime forces. One of the missions was to lead one of NATO's two fregatts forces from June 2013 until June 2014. The task as flagship was divided between KNM Fridtjof Nansen and KNM Thor Heyerdal. Minerydderfart°yene KNM Otra and KNM Karm°y participated in one of the NATO's standing minerydderstyrker in each period, Spring and autumn, respectively. In addition, Norway had strength boss in the period 09 April to 26 May 2014, with KNM Valkyrie as flagship.

The frigate KNM Helge Ingstad started on the mission with to escort chemical weapons out of Syria in December 2013. The frigate was supported by a security from the Navy's Hunter weapons as well as by subject matter experts within the chemical weapons and casualty protection. KV Andenes took over in the end of april and solved the Mission until it was completed in June 2014.

The Navy also deployed officers in the NATO Shipping Center in Northwood, England, in the security-building cooperation Combined Maritime Forces in Bahrain.

Exercises

Rehearsal and training is a means to produce and maintain capable units and personnel at a high readiness level, and to enable them to operate nationally and internationally. The Navy conducted three major exercises in the bond-so called Task Group periods of varying duration through 2014, where a varying the number of Norwegian and foreign vessels took part.

The first period emphasized on to educate and to trust the future Norwegian and foreign submarine commanders and priority also, cooperation between national units and a of the standing maritime forces of NATO. The other period was integrated in the large NATO exercise Cold Response. Since Norway had command of a of NATO's standing maritime forces, the practice had a significant participation from other NATO forces. The purpose of the exercise was to strengthen cooperation with these forces and between services.

The third period had the focus on preparing korvettene and KNM Valkyrie to NATO-readiness. In addition, it carried certification and the mustering of several vessels. Rehearsal proceeds of the three Task Group-periods are considered very good. Another important exercise was the Rim of the Pacific, the world's largest naval exercise. Norway took part for the first time on exercise with the frigate KNM Fridtjof Nansen. The vessel fired including anti-ship missile NSM against a us target vessels. The feedback from the participants on the exercise was very positive.
