720 Squadron / 720 Skvadron
The primary tasks of 720 Squadron is to support the defense departments of transport and reconnaissance. The department is stationed at Rygge Air Station. Also performed VIP flights and the provision of support civilian institutions as police, fire and ambulance. The squadron was established in 1967 at the airport and the first time the department operated a motley mix of aircraft and helicopters, Bell 47, Bell UH-1B, Saab Safir and DHC-3 Otter. In 1976, the squadron transferred Rygge, and since 1989 has operated helicopter of type Bell 412SP.
International operations are a part of everyday life for 720 squadron. The department has repeatedly served in the UN and NATO missions. Under the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon in 1979 lost squadron and a helicopter crew of three were killed. In the years 1993-1996 were the principal UN forces in former Yugoslavia (UNPROFOR) and the four Bell helicopters were stationed in Tuzla in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Twice, the squadron has been in Kosovo, in 2001 and from 2004 to 2005.
Bell 412 operated by a pilot and a system operator. In addition, rescue / physician or a coordinator to be part of the crew. The helicopter can lift 13 persons or 8 soldiers with gasket. Under the hanging load can be up to 1500 kg depending on the fuel.
