The 717 Squadron, with two of its DA-20 Falcon Jet, represents Norway's Airborne Electronic Warfare (EK - Elektronisk Krigførings) - capacity. The aircraft can both jam (ie, disrupt a possible opponent of electromagnetic signals) in the appropriate frequency bands and operate electronic information collection, but the system is basically designed for the training of radar operators, self-protection and tactics development. The squadron has on many occasions demonstrated high professional competence and capacity in war scenarios with their support to national and allied departments.

In peacetime the EK aircraft provide support in surveillance, sovereignty, governance, incident and crisis management. The squadron is be prepared to provide support to all branches of the defense in connection with the defense of the Norwegian areas, and to provide equity support of monitoring, incident and crisis management in international operations.

EK aircraft should have capacity to carry out missions within the electronic support measures, strategic acquisition of emitterdata, and a limited capacity within the electronic countermeasures to support national and international operations. EK aircraftcontinue to distribute the collected emitterdata on a time-efficient and safe manner.

One of the squadron aircraft are configured for personnel transport and flight control of the military's navigation aids. Control Flying entails routine inspection of navigational aids to uncover any errors or disturbances that may make the utility unsuitable for navigation. This is normally done twice a year. The squadron also performs flight control of the military radar stations to monitor their radar coverage and accuracy.

The squadron set transportation support in connection with the VIP missions. DA20 serial number 0125 is adapted to transport personnel, has a range of over 3000 km, and can thus carry up to eight passengers non-stop across much of Europe. Aircraft are used in connection with VIP missions for the Royal Family, Government and Defence Management.
