338 Squadron / 338 Skvadron
338 squadron was established in Orland in 1954 and is currently equiped ["scheduled"] with F-16 fighter aircraft. In 2002-03 and 2006, the department in action in Afghanistan. The mission was the presence and support for ground troops in Afghanistan (Close Air Support), and resulted in several sharp deliveries of weapons. From March to May 2006 was the principal NATO ISAF forces (International Security and Assistance Force) and the Norwegian fighter force was stationed in Kabul. From 1 October 2002 to 31 March 2003 Mon operated from Manas Air Base in Khirgisistan. Both detachments were also supported by air and material from all three of the Air Force F-16 squadrons (338 skv in Orland and 331 + 332 skv at Bodø).
In August 2001, 338 Squadron's new official Tiger Squadron - Tigerskvadron - (after discontinued 336 Squadron), and the department trains regularly with tigerskvadroner from around the world. When Norway joined NATO in 1949, went two years before Parliament voted to Orland for a permanent air base in accordance with NATO standards. In 1954 work was gone so far that it could be used, and in October the same year, the 338 Squadron from the sun to Orland. Since the department has been based on the air base in Fosen peninsula in southern Norway. The production was at 5 pilots, 15 engineers and 5 F-84 Thunderjet. From 1960 to 1966 was scheduled squadron with F-86F Sabre, which was a supersonic fighter aircraft. In 1966 arrived in the F-5 Freedom fighter. The primary task was air-to-ground operations. F-5`s reign until 1985, when the F-16 Fighting Falcon came. Today the practice squad the air-air and air-ground roles.
