337 Squadron / 337 Skvadron

The main task of 337 Squadron Lynx helicopters is to support Coast Guard efforts to enforce the Norwegian interests in the waters. In addition to the core tasks that are reconnaissance and surveillance of the Norwegian waters 337 Squadron performs many search and rescue missions.

Lynx helicopter is the Coast Guard's eyes in the air. With the radar on board the helicopter could reconnaissance of large ocean areas and identification of vessels is done efficiently. Operation area stretching from the North Sea in the south to Svalbard Islands and the Barents Sea in the north. When the helicopter is on board the vessel and aircraft crew readiness to participate and assist in search and rescue operations.

Another important task for the department to remedy the 334 squadron needs for education and training of pilots in terms of introduction of NH-90 as a new unit helicopter for the Navy and Coast Guard. The order for 14 new helicopters was signed in 2001, and the first helikopterert will arrive in Norway in spring 2008. Six of the helicopters to the 334 Squadron for operations from the new frigates of the Fridtjof Nansen class. In autumn 2009, the NH-90 to take over as new kystvakthelikopter for MK-86 Lynx. Eight of the machines were assigned to the 337 Squadron and replace the current Lynx. It was planned that NH-90 would be operational as new kystvakthelikopter autumn 2009. NH-90 means increased capacity for 337 Squadron in the helicopter with longer range, greater load capacity, higher speed and better navigation and radar equipment.

337 Squadron was formed at Gardermoen Air Station in 1950 with the intent of the type of fighter Vampire. In 1953 the department moved to Værnes where it remained until the closure 1 januar 1955. Just eight months later, 337 Squadron reactivated, this time with modern F-86k Sabre all-weather interceptor. In 1963 brought reductions in the Air Force led the 337 Squadron was merged with 332 Squadron - under the name of 332 squadron. September 1963 saw 337 Squadron was disbanded. 17 years later - on 1 January 1980 - 337 was recovered as Coast Guard squadron home base of Bardufoss and intent of helicopters of type MK-86 Lynx.
