Awards of the Republic of Latvia Minister of Defence
The Medal of Honorary Recognition was founded in 1996. The Medal of Honourable Merit for Contribution to Armed Forces Development was founded on November 11th, 1999 commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Latvian Army. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) Badge was founded in 1996 reinstating the historical Republic of Latvia Ministry of War Council and Office, and the Latvian Army Budget and Credit Department badge, originally established by the Minister of War of the Republic of Latvia in 1924. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) Certificate of Recognition was founded in 1996 and amended in 2002. The Commemorative Medal for Advancing Latvia’s Accession to NATO was awarded as an acknowledgement of appreciation for contribution in the development of the Latvian defence system, by promoting Latvia’s membership in NATO.
The Medal Commemorating NATO Summit 2006 was founded on June 21st, 2007.
The Medal of Honorary Recognition is conferred as an acknowledgement of appreciation for merit in the development and strengthening of National Armed Forces, for merit in military-patriotic education, and in the formation of citizens’ national awareness by training them to be ready to defend their state and native land.
The Medal of Honorary Recognition is made of silver. The Medal is a round shield that measures 38 mm in diameter. An ancient Latvian wooden castle is depicted in the centre of the obverse of the Medal surrounded by the inscription ATZINIBAS GODA ZIME (Medal of Honorary Recognition). The reverse has the inscription AIZSARDZIBAS MINISTRA APBALVOJUMS (Minister of Defence Award) in the centre.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) Awards Commission reviews recommendations for a person to be awarded with this award and submits its decision to the Minister of Defence. The Medal of Honorary Recognition is conferred by order of the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Latvia.
According to the Statutes of the Medal of Honorary Recognition it is permitted to award a person with this Medal only once.
The Medal of Honorary Recognition is the highest MoD award; it is worn in order of precedence after state awards on a 32 mm wide blue ribbon with two vertical silver stripes. 10 mm wide ribbon is worn on a dress uniform.
Republic of Latvia Minister of Defence Award – Medal of Honourable Merit for Contribution to Armed Forces Development
The Medal of Honourable Merit for Contribution to Armed Forces Development is conferred as an acknowledgement of appreciation for merit in the development of the National Armed Forces, in the formation of soldiers’ national awareness, and for exemplary service.
The Medal of Honourable Merit for Contribution to Armed Forces Development is made of silver. The Medal is a round shield that measures 38 mm in diameter. The MoD logo (Latvian riflemen, later Latvian Army headgear insignia) – the radiant sun with three stars surmounting a vertical field gun, muzzle up, and a diagonally crossed sword and rifle, hilt and barrel up, enclosed by an oak wreath is depicted in the centre of the obverse side of the Medal. The reverse has the inscription PAR IEGULDIJUMU BRUNOTO SPEKU ATTISTIBA (for Contribution to Armed Forces Development) in the centre which is surrounded by the inscription AIZSARDZIBAS MINISTRA APBALVOJUMS (Minister of Defence Award).

The Medal of Honourable Merit for Contribution to Armed Forces Development is worn in order of precedence after state awards and the MoD Medal of Honorary Recognition on a 32 mm wide green (symbolizing defence and Latvian land) ribbon separated in the middle with the Latvian red-white-red national colours (symbolizing the Minister of Defence as senior official of Latvian defence). The 10 mm wide ribbon is worn on a dress uniform.
Republic of Latvia Minister of Defence Award – Ministry of Defence Badge 
The badge is conferred to soldiers and civilians, who have served in the Ministry of Defence and its subordinated institutions not less than three years.
The MoD Badge is a hexagonal silver star that measures 50 mm in diameter. The Latvian Small Coat of Arms with numbers 19 and 91 on its either side surmounting a vertical field gun, muzzle up, and a diagonally crossed sword and rifle, hilt and barrel up, enclosed by an oak wreath is depicted in the centre of the Badge. The MoD logo (Latvian riflemen, later Latvian Army headgear insignia) – the radiant sun with three stars is located on the top of the Badge.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) Awards Commission reviews recommendations for a person to be awarded with this award and submits its decision to the Minister of Defence. The MoD Badge is conferred by an order of the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Latvia.
According to the Statutes of the MoD Badge it is permitted to award a person with the Badge only once.
The MoD Badge is worn on military uniform or on a civilian suit below state and military decorations. The MoD Badge is to be placed above other badges. The wearing of the MoD Badge is not obligatory.
Republic of Latvia Minister of Defence Award – Ministry of Defence Certificate of Recognition
A person or a group of persons can be awarded with the Certificate of Recognition as an acknowledgement of appreciation for contribution in the development of the Latvian National Armed Forces, for merit in military-patriotic education, and in the formation of citizens’ national strength awareness by training them to be ready to defend their state and native land.
There are two types of the MoD Certificate of Recognition: with a grey-shaded background for individual awarding and a white background for awarding to a group of persons. Crossed spears and swords, heads and hilts up, surmounting an ancient Latvian wooden castle on a rising sun, enclosed by oak branches is depicted in the upper central part with the MoD logo (Latvian riflemen, later Latvian Army headgear insignia) – the radiant sun with three stars is located on the top of the Certificate. The semicircular shield with the inscription LATVIJAS REPUBLIKAS AIZSARDZIBAS MINISTRIJA (the Republic of Latvia Ministry of Defence) and GODA RAKSTS (Certificate of Recognition) is located in the centre of the Certificate. The shield is superimposed by oak branches.

It is permitted to award a person or a group of persons with the Certificate more than once.
Republic of Latvia Minister of Defence Award – Commemorative Medal for Advancing Latvia’s Accession to NATO
The Commemorative Medal for Advancing Latvia’s Accession to NATO was founded on March 19th, 2004 commemorating admittance of the Republic of Latvia in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The Commemorative Medal for Advancing Latvia’s Accession to NATO is made of bronze. The Medal is a round shield that measures 38 mm in diameter.
The official emblem of NATO is depicted on the obverse of the Medal. The reverse has the inscription SEKMEJOT LATVIJAS DALIBU NATO (for Advancing Latvia’s Accession to NATO) in the centre which is surrounded by the inscription AIZSARDZIBAS MINISTRA APBALVOJUMS (Minister of Defence Award).
The medals are numbered.
According to the Statutes of the Commemorative Medal for Advancing Latvia’s Accession to NATO it was permitted to award a person with the Medal only once. Recommendations for a person to be awarded with the Medal were accepted by the MoD Awards Commission until December 31th, 2004. The Commemorative Medal for Advancing Latvia’s Accession to NATO was conferred by an order of the Republic of Latvia Minister of Defence. Awarding is not being continued.
A total of 740 persons have been awarded with the Commemorative Medal for Advancing Latvia’s Accession to NATO, including Latvian State officials, foreign officials, and employees of the Latvian Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs, Latvian National Armed Forces (NAF) soldiers, foreign soldiers, representatives of public organisations and others.
The Commemorative Medal for Advancing Latvia’s Accession to NATO is worn in order of precedence after state and MoD awards on a 32 mm wide carmine red (symbolizing Latvian national flag) and dark blue (symbolizing NATO) ribbon separated by a silver stripe (symbolizing justice, honesty and faithfulness). The 10 mm wide ribbon is worn on a dress uniform. A miniature bow tie lapel pin is worn on civilian clothes.
Republic of Latvia Minister of Defence Award – The Medal Commemorating NATO Summit 2006
The Medal Commemorating NATO Summit 2006 was awarded as an acknowledgement of appreciation for the contribution to the organizition and success of the meeting of heads of state and government of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member countries in Riga on 28 – 29 November, 2006.
The Medal Commemorating NATO Summit 2006 is made of brass. The Medal is a round shield that measures 38 mm in diameter.
The official emblem of NATO with the inscriptions SAMITS, SUMMIT and SOMMET, the national flag of Latvia, a panorama of Old Riga and the year 2006 are depicted on the obverse of the Medal. The reverse has the inscription AIZSARDZIBAS MINISTRA APBALVOJUMS (Minister of Defence Award) in the centre.

According to the Statutes of the Medal Commemorating NATO Summit 2006 it was permitted to award a person with the Medal only once. Recommendations for a person to be awarded with the Medal were accepted by the MoD Awards Commission until September, 2007. The Medal Commemorating NATO Summit 2006 was conferred by order of the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Latvia. The Minister of Defence was authorized to award a person with the Medal without a formal approval from the MoD Awards Commission. Awarding is not being continued.
A total of 571 persons have been awarded with the Medal Commemorating NATO Summit 2006.
The Medal Commemorating NATO Summit 2006 is worn in order of precedence after state and MoD awards on a 32 mm wide dark blue (symbolizing the colour of NATO flag) and light blue (symbolizing the colour of Riga flag) ribbon separated in the middle by the Latvian red-white-red national colours. The 10 mm wide ribbon is worn on a dress uniform.
