TNC 35 patrol boat
In addition to luxury yachts, Lürssen is known worldwide for its high-speed craft and history as combatant vessels provider to a range of main and less known navies and governmental services. The current product portfolio ranges from the 28-meter FPB 28 with a maximum speed of 35 knots to the FPB 57 combatant fast craft capable of 38 knots and the 35-meter TNC 35 with stern launching ramp and an armament package that includes a 20/30 main gun.
According to media reports, the Bremen-based Lürssen shipyard wanted to deliver as many as 70 speed boats to Saudi Arabia. A part could be built at the Wolgaster Peene shipyard, which Lürssen took over on 01 May 2013. Two types of boat are considered for the billion dollar business: The TNC 35 fast patrol boat is 35 meters long and eight meters wide with a draft of 1.80 meters. Your two diesel units with a total output of 7800 kW accelerate it up to 40 knots (74 km / h). The other fast patrol boat is the FPB 38.
Member of the Bundestag Eckhardt Rehberg spoke out in favor of exporting patrol boats to Saudi Arabia, which may soon also be built in Wolgast. This business would be of enormous importance for Germany as a shipyard location, said Rehberg 20 February 2013 in Berlin. This could secure or create thousands of jobs. Rehberg is the Federal Government's rapporteur for the maritime industry. Peene-Werft in Volgast, was once the main center of the GDR's military shipbuilding.
The unit price for the boats is said to be between ten and 25 million euros. Lürssen had already delivered similar boats to the Persian Gulf region. The last export order for patrol boats came from the Sultanate of Brunei on Borneo, where four boats were delivered in 2009/10. The new boats could be slightly smaller versions of this type.
The first TNC 35 patrol boat, “Jeddah” (TR 5243), was delivered for Saudi Arabia’s Border Guards in November 2016. The 35m long patrol boat had conducted sea trials in the Baltic Sea in mid-September 2016. The 1.5 billion euros deal for the construction of patrol boats for the Border Guards (Coast Guards) of Saudi Arabia (which are part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the country) was reached with Fr. Lürssen Werft in early 2013. However, the implementation of the contract was delayed because of the long process of issuing licenses for the of export military equipment to Saudi Arabia by the German government. The contract calls for the delivery of a mix of TNC 35 and FPB 38 patrol boats. According to Lürssen, the TNC 35 vessel is 35 meters and equipped with two diesel engines with a combined output of 7.800 kW. It can reach speeds of 40 knots. The FPB 38 is 38 meters long with a maximum speed of 31 knots.
The lead Peene-Werft in Wolgast for Saudi Arabia, the TNC 35 project TRS 5243 Jeddah patrol boat was launched on May 26, 2016 and was tested since the summer, and was shipped to the customer on 05 November 2016. Two patrol boats for Saudi Arabia - "Afif" and "Buqayq" - were loaded onto the "BBC Alberta". The multi-purpose freighter from the fleet of the Leer shipping company Briese Schiffahrt made a stopover in the Holtenau inland port, where the bunkering for the trip to the Suez Canal was planned. The 138 meter long and about 21 meter wide “BBC Alberta” headed for the English Channel in the North Sea. "Afif" and "Buqayq" were created at the Peenewerft in Wolgast, which belongs to the Lürssen Group. The duo is part of a major order for more than 100 units and a total volume of around 1.5 billion euros, which the Saudi Arabian coast guard Lürssen had placed. The order has been considered controversial since it became known at the end of 2012. However, the German Federal Security Council also granted approval for the current export of the two new vessels.
The armed patrol boats are 35 meters long and are of the TNC35 type with a displacement of 210t. Two more units, namely "Al Aflaj" and "Farasan", were delivered on board the Briese ship "BBC Congo". These newest speed boats for the Saudi Border Guard are equipped with two MTU engines. With an output of 7800 kilowatts, they reach a maximum speed of 40 knots. The units in this class are 8 meters wide and have a draft of 1.8 meters.
