YKVH Nordkapp class, ice-reinforced
Nordkapp Class consists of the three vessels KV "Nordkapp", KV «Senja» and KV «Andenes». They have all been used to handle major fishing conflicts, toured Antarctica and the first war in the Gulf. Accurate updates in accordance with class requirements have made them operational until around 2020. The vessel is a good asset for operations in the northern seas and is equipped with both hangar and helicopter.
By 2010 the Armed Forces had four ocean-going coastguard vessels with a helicopter on board, KV Svalbard, which was introduced in 2001 and the Nordkapp class with three vessels being phased into service in 1980. By 2020, the Nordkapp class would be 40 years old and reached its technical life expectancy. The condition of the Nordkapp class turned out to be worse than initially assumed, and there was a need to upgrade the vessels so that they will have relevant operative capacities until 2020. The capacity of the Nordkapp class for the Coast Guardtask solution, like helicopter-bearing and ice-reinforced vessels, there is a need to find a replacement by 2020. In addition, the lease agreement for a vessel (KV Ålesund) terminated in 2016. There is a need to replace the capacity of these vessels in the period 2016-2020. Project 3049 "Replacement Nordkapp Class" is the project that was intended to meet this need in relation to the Nordkapp class.
