Kimon
The Adams class destroyers are currently the only ships in the Hellenic Navy (and Eastern Mediterranean) with the ability to carry the SM-1 missile. This missile of course is a very powerful weapon system that provides added range to the anti-aircraft 'umbrella' around a fleet.
The basic design is based on that of the Forrest Sherman class destroyers, improved, and with an aluminium superstructure. These four ships are all of the second batch with the M13 single-arm launcher and upgraded electronics. Very seaworthy ships, they are a little long in the tooth. After seven years service in the Greek navy, they may be retired on the introduction of the Kidd class destroyers. On the other hand, they are still effective area-defense ships, a much needed capability given the geography involved with a possible conflict against Turkey.
