Glavkos Type 209-1100

Diesel submarines (ornon-nuclear submarines, as they are still referred to)continue to occupy an important position in these programs. The Greek navy was the first to order submarines produced by West Germany. In 1967 they ordered four boats of design 209/1100, and in 1975, another four (design 209/1200). In all, by the end of the Cold War the Greek navy had 10 submarines in its fleet, including two Balao-type boats obtained from the United States in the 1940's.

In 1991, taking into account the fact that the four "GLAFKOS" were approaching the 20 year presence in Greek seas, it was decided to do an upgrade, code-named NEPTUNE I. Four of Greece's eight Glavkos-type (GeT—209/ 1100) submarines were updated power plants and upgraded electronic equipment; Harpoon surface-to-surface missiles have been added to one. One of the submarines was modernized in Germany, the others at the Salamis Shipyard near Piraeus.

The works began in 1991 on TRITON in Kiel, Germany, at the premises of HDW. The boat was ready in 1993 and returned to Greece. The PROTEUS was the first boat upgraded to naval base of Salamis in a cooperation of the technical services of the Navy and HDW. Work began in 1993 and ended in 1996. Thereafter followed GLAFKOS and Nereus [NIREFS] whose work was gone from 1996 to 1998 and 1998 to 2000 respectively.

The main tasks of modernization was:

  • Change the ichoentopistikis device (SONAR) with new, modern technology and with low frequency noise detection capabilities.
  • SDBT change with new features and the possibility of firing k/b HARPOON.
  • Change RADAR, electronic countermeasure device.
  • Change machines, air conditioning system.
  • Noise reduction measures.

The performance of the modernized showed a clear improvement in their operational ability.

The propulsion is achieved through a 4,600 HP engine, a propeller, while charging the array is made of 4 generators that run on 4 DIESEL 2400 HP engines. The "GLAFKOS "is fully equipped with a large number of antennas, transmitters and receivers that are necessary for their communications. The intercom includes two independent networks. A variety of networks and give ALARM indications to the crew a full picture of the material throughout the ship. A large number of pumps, compressors and ancillary machinery serves the boat in all operational needs. The Sonar equipment on a boat is increasingly critical system in the dark world of the deep sea.

Successful execution of any mission assigned to the h/b depends on a clear understanding of the position at any time. This knowledge is obtained from a wide range of electronic and optical devices and instruments such as Radar Thornson, inertia shipping system, GPS navigation devices, as well as two periscopes. The sonar of the "GLAFKOS", the German company ATLAS ELEKTRONIK is one of the most modern and reliable worldwide. It consists of active and passive SONAR research and affixing medium frequencies, passive distance measurement device, and SONAR side layout, lower frequencies.

The "GLAFKOS" is equipped with 8 torpedo tubes. The great variety of weapons and advanced steering shot "KANARIS" make the boat able to destroy a any target. The armament consists of SUBHARPOON missiles and wire-guided torpedoes.

The "GLAFKOS" has a crew of 35 (approximately) of which 6-7 Officers while the remaining crew members are permanent commissioned officers of the Navy, except a specialist physician. The "GLAFKOS" can carry enough food for feeding the crew for 50 days, while there is no problem in using water.
