Epirus [ex US Knox] Frigate

In 1993 three Knox-class frigates were leased from the United States Navy and placed in the Epirus or Makedonia class. In order to modernize its fleet during the 1990s, Greece purchased a number of vessels from Europe and the United States. Four ADAMS class destroyers and three KNOX class frigates, which use 1200 psi steam boilers for their steam turbine propulsion plant, were purchased from the United States. Each ADAMS class vessel had four 1200 psi steam boilers and each KNOX class vessel had two 1200 psi steam boilers. A total of twenty-two 1200 psi steam boilers were in use by the Hellenic Navy in the 1990s. Quality in maintenanceof these boilers was the prime concern for readiness, safety, and cost reduction.

In September 1998, the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations Security Assistance Act of 1998 Section 202(b)(2) authorized the grant transfer to Greece of the Fast Frigate HEPBURN (FF 1055). This 28 year-old vessel had no remaining service life and was to be provided free of charge as a logistics asset to the Hellenic Navy. Greece will use the vessel to provide spare parts for its two operational KNOX FFs. The original acquisition cost of this vessel was $26,589,000.
