2007-2??? - Under Nicolas Sarkozy
On May 6, 2007, Nicolas Sarkozy gained the election by 53.06% compared with 46.94% with Ségolène Royal. After this failure, the left voters remobilised themselves for the second round of legislative voting on June 17, 2007. The PS obtained 186 deputies out of 577, that is to say 46 more than in 2002. Personalities of the right were failures: Alain Juppe was beaten in Bordeaux by Michele Delaunay. On this impetus, the Socialist party was largely victorious in the municipal elections of March 2008. On the one hand, the French renewed their confidence in the existing socialist elected official in the town halls. Moreover, the PS conquered big cities: Toulouse, Amiens, Caen, Rheims, Argenteuil ... . With cantonal votes, the left gains more departments. It directsed some 60% of the cities of more than 100.000 inhabitants and 20 areas.
It is all the paradox of this period: the Socialists lost the presidential one and the European referendum, but gained bright victories at the time of the local polls. After a difficult congress of Rheims, the Socialists approached a division. Martine Aubry was elected First secretary of the PS. At the European elections, it implemented a limitation of the office plurality of the mandates in the socialist candidate nomination. But with these elections, the PS paid for the bad image given to the French during the congress of Rheims: the Socialists collect 16.3%, far behind UMP (27,8%).
At the Summer school of the La Rochelle, Martine Aubry resolutely engaged the party on the path of restoration: she announced a consultation of the militants on the office plurality of the mandates and the primary educations, and the launching of a social network of the PS and those who want to act and discuss on the left. On October 1, the militants approved with a vast majority the proposals which were submitted to them. The not-office plurality of the mandates will be the rule for the legislative elections of 2012 and the PS will organize primary educations open to all, to choose its candidate in 2012. To prepare its proposals for 2012, the PS organizes the Tour de France of the project: debates with the French are organized during the eight stages. The goal: to collect the diagnosis of the greatest number to nourish the reflexion of the Socialists, and to develop a France which one likes.
