Hylje Oil spill response Vessel

The oil spill protection vessel Hylje [Seal] is used for oil spill response and maintenance vessel assignments as well as as a diver's base. The ship is owned by the Finnish environmental. The naval forces are responsible for occupying and operating the vessel. The vessel is part of the Coastal Fleet and its main tasks are oil spill response, cable work, acting as a support vessel for diving training, transport and support vessels.

The Hylje is part of the 8th service squadron and its home berth is located in the Navy garrison in Upinniemi. The ship's sidewall number is 799. It can be quickly converted to a minesweeper or mine clearance. The ship's main tasks are oil spill response, cable work, acting as a support vessel for diving training, transporting and support vessel tasks. The oil recovery vessel Hylje is controlled and occupied by the Navy in the Gulf of Finland Marine Defense Area. Its home port is Upinniemi in Kirkkonummi.

The ship was built in 1981. When completed, it was 54 meters long with a width of 12.5 meters and a draft of three meters. It is a container-type ship, which, by changing the "containers", changes the purpose of the ship. In 1990, the stern continued to improve steering characteristics, and the ship received new 2 x 1000 horsepower diesel engines. Previously it was towed in the winter by either an icebreaker or a large tug capable of breaking the ice. The seal was modernized in 2014, when the ship was at the shipyard for 13 months due to repairs and the vessel returned to operational oil recovery capability in August 2015. As a result of the modernization, the vessel length and displacement increased for 900 cubic meters of oil collection capacity.

The Finnish Environment Institute SYKE on 29 April 2014 signed an agreement with Uusikaupungin Työvene Oy for the renovation of the oil spill vessel Hylke. The value of the order is EUR 11.7 million and the work will take 14 months. The purpose of the overhaul is to extend the lifespan of the ship by 15-20 years and to increase its operational capacity and capacity. The modernization would improve Finland's oil preparedness, especially in the busy Gulf of Finland.

As part of the overhaul, the ship's electrical systems, emergency generator, engine control, navigation systems, bridge and accommodation were upgraded. The efficiency, safety and environmental friendliness of the seal were improved. As part of the overhaul, the hull will be extended by about 10 meters, which will increase its cargo space and provide better bridge, housing, service and working space. After repair, the maximum length of the vessel is 64.30 meters. The ship was at the shipyard for 13 months and returned to operational oil recovery in August 2015.
